Is there a need to buy the railpass (2-8 days of travel for a day window), or can I just buy the individual tickets for the train? Is there a benefit that I do not understand to buying the railpass?

It is not clear which pass you are talking about, but Rick doesn't mention the RENFE Spain Pass, which you can buy for 4, 6, 8 and 10 journeys- it is a pretty new product.
That one at least includes the cost of the reservations, which you can make on line.
A!though there is an unproven thought that reservations may be quota controlled even with that pass.
You would need to price out each planned journey on the RENFE site for point to point journeys and establish whether or not the pass was better value for you.
