Spain/Portugal Trip Help!

My husband and I are planning a trip to Spain/Portugal for May 2018. Right now nothing is set it stone, but we hope for 10-12 days. I know there is so much to see and we won't see it all - but we need help narrowing it down. We are sure we want to see Lisbon and Madrid. It seems it may be easiest to skip Barcelona - is this a mistake? I have read great things about Seville. Is a trip to the Canary Islands worth it (if we could add a few days on)? Some other possibilities we've read about are Faro, Granada, Córdoba. We will most likely do 3-4 overnight cities with multiple day trips. We would love suggestions on which cities to use as a base and which are worth a day trip.

As for us, we like to spend 2-3 nights in a city, we don't typically do more than that so we are ok hopping around every few days. We would like a beach day (or 2) during our trip as a quick refresh with so much traveling. We will use trains mostly, but are ok doing a short flight. We will be using points to fly and would definitely like to leave from Madrid (it's the most direct) but can fly into Lisbon or Barcelona (or most other cities).

I know I will be in a minority here but I was disappointed with Barcelona. If you're not a fan of Gaudi then you might struggle to find things of interest, even if you are a fan you'll find that the major sites are incredibly busy simply because there isn't really that much to see and do in the city. Having been to La Ramblas I'm struggling to understand why it's a "must see" as it's nothing more than a long pedestrianised avenue of shops and overpriced restaurants. It was absolutely heaving when I visited and I'm sure I wasn't the only one wondering what all the fuss is about. I would skip Barcelona.

Skip the Canary Islands as well. Whilst there are some nice natural areas the islands are predominantly geared towards package beach holidays.

You have plenty of time for reading and planning but the key points to start with are to plan as long a stay as possible and to plan that you'll fly into one city and out of another, using a multi-city flight search. Public transport across the border is sparse, so only do it in one direction, if at all. Transport between Madrid and Lisbon is by flight or overnight train. Transport between Seville and the southern half of Portugal is by bus.

The Explore Europe section of this site will provide a good outline of Rick's sightseeing priorities, which are then fleshed out in his guidebooks for each country.

If you can't narrow it down, that is when I put aside the planning for a week or two to let the brain settle...because your list of places is too long and there seems to be no logic to a physical plan. You can't do it all.
Barcelona is an easy international flight that can be coupled with other cities or regions in the future. 10-12 days in Spain does not allow for it (in my opinion).
Arrive Madrid 3 nights (as you seem to be the busy type, this could allow for a day trip to Toledo or one of the other outlying historical cities)...and takes into consideration any jet lag or remote changes of delayed flights or bumping off flights (it happens).
Train to Granada 2 nights
Train to Seville 3-4 nights (including a day trip to Cordoba)
....and you haven't even gotten to Portugal yet.
I don't know Portugal, but if the bus goes from Seville to Southern Portugal, it might allow a beach over night.
Then Lisbon and time is up.

Keep it simple ...

Start in Lisbon (4 nights)
•with day trips to Sintra, Belem+Cascais

Fly to Sevilla (4 nights)
•with day trips to Cordoba, Jerez

Train to Madrid (4 nights)
•with day trips to Toledo, Segovia

Although I totally disagree with JC about Barcelona (it has many worthwhile museums and historic districts older than Madrid's), it would be better to postpone it till a later trip, since you already have so much on your plate. I'd also skip Faro. Frankly, the Algarve isn't the best area of Portugal for most visitors.

I think David's outline is a good and manageable one. You can get to the beach (maybe Cascais?) from Lisbon.

I'll just reinforce what's been said. David's itinerary sounds great to me - can't think of anything I'd change. Like JC, I am not a Gaudi fan. Unlike JC, I love Barcelona. I enjoyed visiting the Sagrada Familia, didn't go to any other Gaudi sights and still haven't seen everything I wanted to in Barcelona in 2 visits totalling nearly 2 weeks. But your trip is too short to add it.
