Spain/Portugal for 3-4 weeks

WE are planning for Portugal at end of September for approximately 14 nights, then Spain for 7 -10 nights.
Would you suggest going to Spain from Northern Portugal at the beginning of the trip and seeing Southern Portugal after Spain OR seeing all of Portugal, then going to Spain from Southern Portugal. WE do not know where to go in Spain other than San Sebastian/La Rioja area.
For now, I am just trying to figure out how to see both countries without much back tracking. We are willing to train/fly between countries.
Your opinion is appreciated.
Thank you

One thing you need to know is that it is not easy to go from so. Portugal to so. Spain, or vice versa. Consider flying into Lisbon, working your way north, and departing from Porto to Spain. If you do an open jaw ticket, (e.g. into Lisbon and home from Madrid) you’ll have one more day for touring
As far as what to do in Spain, you’ll get better responses if you reveal what interests you. Also check your local library for guide books. Without knowing your reasons for your time allotment between the two countries, I say reverse it, or at least give equal time to Spain.

We are touring Spain & Portugal for 32 days plus 2 days of flying, split between the two Countries but are flying in and out of Madrid as the drop off fees for another Country are high! Car rental split in two is reasonable.
We're making a circle from/to:
Salamanca 1 night
Porto 4 nights
Lisbon 5 nights
Faro 5 nights
Seville 3 nights
Malaga 8 nights
Toledo 2 nights
Madrid 4 nights
Originally had 2 nights in Salamanca but the airline changed our flights...
We plan to do day trips every second day from each accommodation & have booked our tickets for Alhambra & Alcázar in Seville
We are 2 couples that have rented 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom condos also at a very reasonable cost.
If you cut some nights off the longer stays you could pare than down to 24 nights and see most of both countries; at least the Western part of Spain & most of Portugal.

Looks like you can fly on TAP or Vueling from Lisbon to Bilbao. Then south to Madrid by train (or drive). Where else you can go depends on how many nights you have in Spain after San Sebastian/La Rioja. I didn't see any reasonable way to get from elsewhere in Portugal to the north of Spain.

I just booked a fairly cheap flight from Seville to Lisbon on Ryanair. We are traveling in and around Marbella and the best option between Lisbon And Seville was using local regional airlines rather then trying to drive.

We are planning spain and Portugal of 60 days. I am curious about the response that you got, that said that it was hard to go from south spain to south Portugal. I was planning on bussing or driving from sevilla to Faro? I checked on eurail site, and it doesn't go through, it goes up and around and takes 29 hours and many changes> . I am wondering if I can bus from one area to another. We have not decided out method of transport, bus or rent a car? Looking for advice about if it is easy to bus?

Karen, please start a separate thread where we can discuss your options. That way, you'll receive an email notification when someone posts a response. The way it stands now, dmalanch will get emails if someone responds to you, and that can become sort of annoying.

Thanks.

To clarify my reply:

Driving between so. Portugal and so. Spain means you would incur the really hefty fee the rental companies levy, unless you drive back to return the car. The bus journey is rather lengthy, but it can be done. There is no direct train. A cheap flight seems to me to be one solution, or what I suggested above.

Start in Barcelona
Train to Logrono for time in Laguardia-Rioja
Visit San Sebastián
Fly from Bilbao to Porto (via Madrid)
Spend 2 weeks in Portugal

To Roslyn response.
We are leasing a car and driving from Lisbon to Toulouse. When we started to look into renting... WOW the drop off fees were unbelievable. But I remember in RS book he mentioned leasing... Well, the same group Euro auto also leases Peugeot. With our car we can get to a number of smaller towns, which we like. We will be doing this in April and May. You can PM me after to see if we had any issues.
