Spain, London and Ireland in December

My Son is studying in San Sebastian Fall, 2014. My husband and I will be flying to Barcelona, arriving December 12th. I would appreciate help with itinerary suggestions. We need to be in San Sebastian around the 17th +/- and then the 3 of us planned on meeting-up with our other two children in London on the 21st.

Any ideas for what to do in-and-around Barcelona and best route to San Sebastian would be appreciated. Should we venture South or do we not have enough time. Should we venture north into the South of France.

We realize it will be cold in December and so our options are somewhat limited by weather, as well. Thanks and we look forward to any/all suggestions.

As winter approaches, cities normally have more sites of interest (and indoors) than do small towns and resort areas. I would stick to northern Spain. Rick's Spain book covers Barcelona, San Sebastian, and other Basque region stops with enough detail to keep you busy on this short trip. You might divide time roughly like this:

Barcelona Dec. 12-15

Direct train Barcelona-Pamplona takes 4 hours and departs 5x/day, or direct trains Barcelona-San Sebastian take 5.5 hours and run less often.

Pamplona Dec. 16-17

San Sebastian Dec. 18-19

Bilbao Dec. 20-21

Fly from Bilbao to London Stansted on Easy Jet for as low as $55 per person.
