Spain itinerary help

It's our first trip to Spain and we'd like to get anyone’s feedback on itinerary options for an 18-day trip, starting and ending in Madrid:

Option 1:
- Day 1: Fly to Madrid, but overnight in Toledo (saving Madrid to the end of the trip)
- 2-3 nights Toledo
- 4 nights Seville, day trips by car throughout southern Spain (or save 2 nights to allow side trip to Morocco)
- 4 nights Granada
- 2 nights Cordoba
- 5 nights Madrid (day trips to northwest of Madrid )

Option 2:
- Day 1: Fly on to Seville from Madrid with the rest of the same itinerary, but make Toledo a day trip from Madrid or stay 2 nights there.

Thoughts? Also, for long-haul trips between cities, for total travel time as well as cost, which tends to be best, fly or train? Looks like flights are a better way to go. Thanks!

I like option 1. I think Toledo definitely deserves an overnight, it's great at night after the day trippers have left.

One change is that Cordoba fits better next to Seville. Either before or after it. This is due to transit connections.

For this itinerary I think train to Toledo, train from there to Seville (via Madrid), train to Córdoba, train or ALSA bus to Granada, then fly back to Madrid. All your cities are on high speed rail EXCEPT Granada. So train everywhere else but cover the long Granada - Madrid leg by plane.

For less travel stress recommend flying onto Seville which means you do not have to handle your luggage until arriving in Seville or use a different mode of transport. This is much more efficient use of your time.

We base out of Malaga and use a car to travel throughout the area. That said we offer the following recommendations/comments:

If you are staying in old town seville having a car is a costly pain in the butt due to getting around in old town, propsensity to be given a ticket, cost of parking and timw spent from getting out of old town and to the edge of the city where your day trip actually commences (add 45 minutes from old town to edge of city one way, so you are sheeing up an hour and a half each time you seek to leave/return the city).

Consider excellent public transport options exist for day trips. Bus service is great and please doe not insult the Spaniards with any thoughts of comparison to USA bus service. Suggest using train/bus service due to less travel stress, usually much chewper than a car, you get to sit and relax while watching the countryside, etc.

From Seville you can day trip via train to Cordoba, bus/train to ronda and several other equal distance places.

We have no interest in Morocco due to "much too touristy" reviews provided by friends who have made the trip.

Four nights in Seville with day trips is time well invested.

Three nights in Granada is time well invested. You must google how to visit alhambra in order to learn about best method to obtain tickets and gain most from the visit.

Thought: we prefer to stay in apartments any time we stay in one local for a minimum of three days (more room, kitchen, usually less expense)

Fly from granada to barcelona and stay four nights.

AVE RENFE train from barcelona to madrid for remainder of the trip.

This itinerary provides a journey through four distinct geographic regions and ultures of Spain.

What time of year are you planning on making this trip?

If it's not too late and you haven't bought your plane tickets yet see if you can fly into Madrid and out of Seville.
It's much easier than having to make your way back. Also, I would consider spending way less time in Madrid and going to Barcelona instead.

Thanks to all of the replies. These are extremely helpful. To answer DJP and travel guy's questions/suggestions, we'll be staying with friends in Malaga over one weekend toward the end of the trip, so we're planning have visited the bulk of what we'd like to see in Andalucia by then. Also, we've already visited Barcelona on a previous trip, so we're wanting to focus on places we haven't been to yet. And, from what I'm reading in other postings, it appears that renting a car in Andalucia may not be the best way to go. We're wanting to hit Ronda and Arcos but either make them day trips from Seville or Malaga. Thoughts?

I would not give Toledo more than 1 night. Take a night away from Seville, Granada and Madrid and you could probably do Barcelona. Just a thought.

So if you have been to Barcelona before why did you say "it's our first trip to Spain"?
Although Catalunya has a strong nationalist movement, Barcelona is still very much a part of Spain.

We were in Barcelona for barely a day at the end of a trip to southern France, so we really feel that this is our first trip to Spain. We're not wanting to include Barcelona this time so we can hop around less than we typically do - in other words, avoid staying 1-2 nights at each place, so that means planning to come back for another trip that will include Barcelona and probably northern Spain.

We just did a similar trip that worked for us. We took day excursions tours out of Granada (olive oil tasting) and Seville ( White hill towns including Ronda). Madrid : 4 nights ... Renfe high speed train to Cordoba: 2 nights....Alsa Supra bus to Granada: 4 nights... Alsa Supra bus to Seville: 5 nights...Renfe high speed train back to Madrid: 4 nights. This allowed us time to do other sight- seeing or day trips if we decided to, or hang out to eat and drink in hidden city plazas. Whatever you decide, it will be fun, and have a great time. George
