Spain Itinerary

Hello,
Just going over an itinerary for Spain and would like some advice please. We are not museum people but absolutely love wandering the streets and taking in the architecture and history of the cities/towns we are in. Don't want to be rushed either and we are planning on using public transportation. We are both well traveled and are familiar with what pace we are comfortable with.

My husband will fly into Madrid on October 3rd and we plan on staying in Madrid until the 9th. I will be meeting him around the 4th or 5th ( I will be walking the Portuguese Camino before and hope to finish on the 2nd and leave for Madrid on the 4th). This should also give him some time to recover from jet lag. I would love to see Toledo for a day trip. So that would be 6 nights in Madrid for him and 4 (hopefully 5) nights for me.

4 nights in Sevilla
4 nights Granada
5 nights Barcelona (will fly there) and do at least one day trip from there

I have a spare night, should I add it to one of those places? Is 4 nights in Granada or Sevilla too long? I am not a fan of one night stays (and probably will be sick of them after the Camino), but would be willing to have one seeing that the rest of the trip is not rushed. Looking at Cordoba or Ronda. If Cordoba, where would that fit easiest? Madrid-Cordoba-Sevilla-Granada-Barcelona?

Thanks in advance!

I have been to all these places and my favorites are Sevilla and Toledo.
I can't see 4 nights in Granada. You didn't mention Cordoba, that is between Madrid and Sevilla. Consider cutting at least one day from Granada and do a day in Cordoba.
Also, a day trip from Madrid to Segovia. The 1800 year old intact Roman aqueduct is amazing. The rest of the city is great as well.
Madrid is great with the Prado and places like the Royal Palace, and Plaza Major. Still, four days to do Madrid is fine not counting the two days for day trips to Toledo and Segovia.

That sounds like a good plan.. I would not want to spend four nights in Granada if there were other places nearby that were of interest..... I also avoid very short stays...last year I spent about a week in Sevilla and in 2024, five nights in Cordoba..

The only other destination that might work for you would be Jerez..especially if you want to see the horse show or tour a sherry bodega....there are direct flights to Barcelona from Jerez (6 days per week) and from Sevilla (daily) on Vueling.

I would add Cordoba for your extra day. If you want to avoid a one night stay, you might consider taking a day from either Granada or Madrid. If you are not prioritizing the major art museums in Madrid (Prado, Reina Sofia, and Thyssens), then taking a day from Madrid might be ok for you. Some people may say to do Cordoba as a daytrip from Seville, but I think Cordoba warrants at least one night. Before deciding where to fit in Cordoba (if you go there), you might want to check on what day you are able to get Alhambra tickets in Granada, assuming you want them. Sounds like a wonderful trip!

I would take a night from Granada and add one night so you could spend 2 nights in Cordoba. Four nights is not too long for Sevilla.

For sure, add Cordoba. I think my post was confusing..only think about adding Jerez if you first add Cordoba...sorry for the mistake..

Granada just doesn't grab me as much as other cities in the region...that's why I thought for days could be shortened...

Happy to hear that you will spend 2 nights in Cordoba as that is my suggestion as well. The Mezquita is magnificent but there is more to Cordoba than just the Mezquita. We loved the gardens of the Alcazar, wandering across the Roman Bridge in the evening and looking back to see the illuminated Mezquita, Palacio de Viana with its dozen patios, and exploring and wandering the narrow lanes of the Juderia with its white-washed buildings, flowers, and patios.

Seville - 4 nights is not too long.
Granada - 3 nights is perfect
Barcelona - you are wise to spend 5 nights in Barcelona. There are so many interesting sights that also need to be pre-booked.

Regarding the order of your trip, it depends on your transportation options. Will you fly to Barcelona from Granada or Seville?

One possibility is this order:
Madrid/Cordoba/Seville/Granada/Barcelona

OR
Madrid/Cordoba/Granada/Seville/Barcelona

Ok I am feeling good about spending more time in Cordoba as everyone seems to be speaking very highly of it! And sounds like the kind of place to spend more than on a day trip to.

I plan on using train/bus everywhere except we will fly from Granada to Barcelona

The train will take you through Cordoba on all of these trips:

Madrid to Seville
Seville to Granada
Granada to Madrid/Barcelona (but I understand you plan to fly to Barcelona).

So you can position Cordoba in several different places. If you end up taking a bus into or out of Granada (trains aren't super-frequent), that's a different situation; the buses take a more direct route and I think they don't pass through Cordoba between Sevile an Granada.

I imagine you know this, but just in case: The Alhambra typically sells out way ahead of time. Stay on top of the ticket situation there.

It seems comfortable to me. I would definitely keep Toledo as a day trip from Madrid, and if you have one spare night I’d use it for Córdoba between Madrid and Sevilla rather than adding more time to Granada. Granada is beautiful, but 4 nights there feels a bit generous unless you want a very slow pace or a day trip. Sevilla for 4 works well. Córdoba sounds like what you are searching for anyway hah. For Barcelona, I’d probably do Girona as the day trip. I planned a similar trip a couple of years ago with my partner, these were useful here, here and here.
