My husband and I want to rent an apartment in the south of Spain or Portugal for a month this winter and don’t know where to begin. I would like to be around other ex pats who speak English. We want to be in a lively area with restaurants and shops in walking distance no more than a half mile away. Air b and b doesn’t give enough information because I’m partially handicapped and need a shower rather than a tub. And an elevator. And preferably no cobblestones because it’s difficult with my scooter. Two bedrooms and two bathrooms. A parking garage would be great because we’d like to have a car to take trips. While I can’t help with apartments, look at Marbella or Torremolinos on the Costa del Sol. Both have large ex-pat communities. I fully understand the dilemma with a scooter. I was recently in Cáceres and an older gentleman was having a heck of a time with his scooter trying to get around and avoid the cobbles. Good luck.

Having traveled around both countries, I would choose Spain - more choices for short trips, better transportation, better food, easier to pick up some of the language are a few of the reasons.
