We want to visit Spain for 3 weeks in 2023, but being a teacher, the only time for long trips is August. We are thinking of spending 5 nights in Barcelona, 3 nights in Madrid and then remaining time in Andalusia - Granada, Cordoba, Seville, not necessarily in this order. Is it crazy to do this in August?
It's going to be hot (and crowded). How well do you handle heat? Some folks do, some do not.
Personally, I do not do really well in intense heat, and I prefer cooler, northern places in mid-summer. But if the only time you can manage to get away is full summer...well, people have survived summer heat for eons (at least there's a chance of aircon nowadays). Lots of people do it. You can take steps to mitigate the heat (get up early, rest mid-day, stay hydrated, wear sensible clothes, etc., etc.). Or, head for cooler places and save the hot parts of Spain for another time when you can go during shoulder season.
Spain is very diverse in cultures, foods, landscapes and climates. Northern Spain is green, with high mountains and plenty of forests, and temperatures are mild even in August. It also rains often, so it may be a better option if you want to escape from the heat of southern and central Spain.
Super hot, invest in staying CONTINUALLY hydrated in order to beat the heat. Recovery time for dehydration typically is a matter of days.
Have you purchased airfare?
Think highs of more than F92 degrees in Granada and F96 in Seville in August on average.
It’s not crazy. You go when you can. Pace yourself during daytime sightseeing and activities. Dinner later in the evening, outside, should help. Dress lightly. Seek shade, and air conditioning, when available.
Prado museum inside in Madrid. Sangria in Seville. Fan yourself, as needed - the small hand fan you get in Spain and wave at yourself will be a souvenir when you get home. Hammam arab bath in Granada - maybe with a massage, too, could be one of the highlights of your trip.
We need to know your feelings about heat, but there are plenty of alternatives! I personally would not choose to visit all of those places on a trip in August because they will be the most crowded as well as very hot.
If Spain’s busy in August, there must be a lot of other people there, enjoying their time. Or enduring their visit, but it won’t be devoid of visitors.
