We are flying to Madrid from USA in December for 11 days stay, not including travel time/days. We want to go to Gran Canaria , spend few days in Madrid and if possible day trip to Toledo. Suggestion on how we bread down the days? Is 6/7 days in Grsn Canaria too much? We want to mix it with some relax, some sight seeing etc. We are arriving to Madrid on December 24th.
It would be nice to have 2.5 days in Madrid not counting arrival / departure days from overseas, plus 1 day for Toledo. This would leave 6 full days for Gran Canaria: it's more than what you need to enjoy the island's main cultural and natural sights, but it's good if you want 3 days of beach time in the mix.
For example:
Day 0: arrival from the USA
Days 1-2: visit Madrid
Day 3: visit Toledo
Day 4: fly to Gran Canaria
Days 5-10: Gran Canaria
Day 11: fly from Gran Canaria in the morning, enjoy a final afternoon in Madrid
Day 12: fly back to the USA
Don't hesitate to rent a car in Gran Canaria to tour the island. You need an IDP, the roads are hilly and twisty, but they are excellent overall so I would not call them "scary" coming from France (but coming from the Midwest, they might freak you out). The New Year is probably a peak time there, but it should not affect the experience too much - the island, and its neighbor Tenerife, are built to handle massive numbers of visitors.
Awesome. Thank you
