Spain for 12 or 13 nights suggestions on itinerary (Barcelona. Madrid, Grenada, Seville, etc)

Hi Folks:

My wife and I are planning a trip to Spain for next September and we know its a large country. Any advice on itinerary? I was thinking Barcelona and possibly Madrid and Seville and or Grenada. Is that too much? Don't want to be too rushed. What city should I eliminate if any. Also is train best way to get around? I was thinking fly into Barcelona and out of Madrid or vice versa.

We didn’t visit Barcelona until our third trip to Spain. We focused on Madrid, Sevilla, Granada and the Basque region in the north during our first two trips there.

On my last cruise, I took a shore excursion to Santiago, Spain. Are you familiar with The Caminos or The Way. They end in Santiago where the Cathedral of St James is.

I so recommend Santiago if it falls within your plans.

Did you say how many days you are going to be in Spain?

I am possibly going to add a link

Sorry but I just noticed you will be in Spain for 12 or 13 nights

Santiago is too far and out of your way.
I would definitely fly into Barcelona and out of Madrid. Seville and Granada are both great cities. If I had to eliminate one it would be Barcelona.
Personally, it was my least favorite city in Spain.
With 13 nights you could see all 4 cities easily staying 3 nights in each city.
With your extra night you could stay in Toledo and book a transfer from there to the airport. It is very close. That’s what we did.

Southern Spain will still be quite hot in September, can you handle tourism in +100 F environment? I agree with bostonphil7, I'd look to Northern Spain, September is a great time to visit. You can fly in to Madrid then take the high speed train to Santiago de Compostela, rent a car and heading east into the Asturias and Cantabria regions, maybe stop at the Picos de Europa for a few days, drive back to Madrid drop off your car and fly out :)
