SPAIN-Dress Code for Churches, etc.

I posted this question on the page GENERAL EUROPE by mistake...sorry about that! Here's my question. I have a trip coming up in late April to Madrid, Granada, Seville, Cordoba and Toledo, SPAIN. I would like to wear my golfing shorts (walking shorts) but are knee length shorts allowed in the churches in Spain. I will also visit the Alahambra in Granada and the Mezquita in Cordoba. What about dress codes in these two places? I have looked at several pages on the forum and also in the Rick Steves book and I'm a little confused.

Same for both sexes - covered shoulders and covered knees, no hats for men. If there is an attendant it probably will be enforced. If not, then be respectful of an active place of worship. Also wearing shorts at that time of year will really tag you as a tourist. You can never be wrong wearing nice pants and shirt.

Alhambra is not a church so you are free to wear your golf shorts there. probably will be some Brits and maybe Germans doing the same.

Thanks everyone for the replies...I believe it's pants for me. Now, if I can just figure out this Madrid to Granada train situation. It looks like the Granada train station may be undergoing some work thus limited train travel. Oh no!

Precisely we were discussing this issue in another travel forum. For Barcelona -albeit it seems you're not visiting it- I can say that, in general terms, the major and most visited churches do enforce some sort of rules most of the time (albeit not all the time). This image is fresh from yesterday afternoon at the Cathedral of Saint Eulàlia in Barcelona (=the main cathedral in the city): http://tinypic.com/r/abpklh/8
