Has anyone lived in both areas, and can offer experiences/words of wisdom when it comes to planning for retirement in either of these locations?
My niece and her husband owned a condo in the Algarve region of Portugal. From the pictures, it was a very modern unit--comparable with U.S. condos. And it seems to be a favorite weekend and vacation place for the English.
I have been to Barcelona, but have no idea what their units look like in the region.
I found this nice blog that you might want to review:

I love both countries a lot, but I would always choose Spain just because I speak Spanish fluently, and I am more comfortable with the culture, which I think is also an important consideration.
Best wishes!
If I had to pick what country to live in Europe, it would be Italy. Second choice, Greece.
For Portugal, Porto and the Douro Valley is my favorite area of that country.
If you are picking based on beaches, then Spain would be best, since the Portuguese beaches run colder longer.
The regions you mention have two different climates. Does that matter?
Do you want a place that's pretty warm in winter?
are you looking for similar to Provence - that's where your identical question focuses?
