Spain 12 days in March with my outdoorsy 10 year old - Madrid - maybe Mallorca - Seville

My son and I will be traveling to Spain for the first time at the very end of February and into March for 12 days. My brother is living in Seville with his family, so we will visit them on this trip (they will just be getting to Spain so aren't much help with the trip planning process). We fly into Madrid and plan to catch a Real Madrid soccer game (my son's favorite team) and explore some sights for 3 days. Then we thought about flying to Mallorca to hike, but maybe this isn't the best use of time. After Mallorca or wherever we go, we will go to Seville for 3-4 days to visit my brother and his family. From Seville, we will go back to Madrid to fly home. We need help planning where to go between Madrid and Seville. Would it be better to go to Malaga, Cordoba, and cities near Seville? We love hiking, biking, and being outdoors. If anyone can recommend where to go between Madrid and Seville and also things to do and tours to take, I'd appreciate it. Interested in a hiking day trips, biking tours, cultural tours and great food tours! Thanks!

I would not fly to Mallorca, seems a lot of time and expense for little payoff, and I don’t know the weather stats but I’d check them. There are some great outdoor areas near Sevilla. Are you comfortable with car rental? (you’d probably need one on Mallorca for outdoor activities).

  • Cordoba is definitely an easy choice because it's smack dab between Madrid and Sevilla on the high speed train line.
  • Mallorca I think would be a bit much in terms of travel and logistics, but it's certainly a great place to visit.
  • My thought traveling with a 10 year old to Spain would definitely be Valencia. You have the best aquarium in Europe, a great zoo, tons of easy bike paths, an amazing food scene, along with the Albufera and other outdoor activities close by (Coves de Sant Josep, climbing up to the castle in Xativa). You could take the train to Valencia and fly to Sevilla pretty easily I think.

We spent 10 days in Spain last March with our 4 and 7 year olds.
In Madrid they really enjoyed the rowboats in Parque de El Retiro, Palacio Real, and (surprisingly) The Prado.
In Seville they enjoyed the Plaza de Toros de Maestranza and the Real Alcazar.
We rented a car in Seville and drove to Gibraltar. We were only there for part of a day but they really enjoyed hiking on the Rock and there was lots to see and do. It was an easy drive with lots of sites to see along the way too.
