Some help with hotel choice in Barcelona please :)

Everyone was so helpful with my itinerary I thought Id move on to Barcelona, the city I have yet to decide on a hotel. I would like a hotel with a balcony and view, or a rooftop terrace and view. My cousin and I are travelling and we are both just past that middle age bracket! We love to explore the city, try new foods, visit a few sites, and weve been known to enjoy a glass of wine. We can`t wait to try tapas!

These are my shortlisted hotels (after extensive reading --so much i`m getting confused!) We prefer smaller, friendly hotels with some character and in an area where we would be able to walk to some of the old city. We have 4 nights in Barcelona:
Hotel Pulitzer
1898
Hotel Praktik
Granvia
Hotel Colon
(I had Jazz on the list but they are booked)

I welcome your comments or suggestions!

I consider myself most fortunate that I have my own room with dear friends in Barcelona and so I cannot give first hand experience.
Therefore my judgement is based on the hotel's website, its location and Tripadvisor comments.
Preferring to be in Eixample and not the Gothic Quarter I would choose between Praktik and Granvia.
Of those two I think I like Praktik more, plus I prefer its address on tranquil Rambla de Catalunya rather than busy Gran Via.

I have stayed at Hotel Lloret at the top of the Ramblas twice - once with my wife and once by myself on the tail end of a business trip. Found this hotel in Rick's Spain 2005 book, not sure whether it's still in there. Last time I stayed there was probably 2010 so check that it's still in Rick's book. It's a great location and they do have rooms with a view over the Ramblas and the Placa de Catalunya - it's very convenient because the airport bus drops you off right near the hotel.

Hello Wendy,
I have stayed at the Hotel Granvia on two different trips and found it to be excellent. It is near enough to all the main sights (only a realistic 5 minute walk from Placa Catalunia) so that your outings for tapas (and possible a taste of vino tinto) will not require public transportation or a taxi. Enjoy Barcelona!
