Soccer game in Spain

I will be in Spain in October and would like to attend a soccer (football) game in either Barcelona or Madrid. Suggestions as to which city/team is more desirable, and ticket purchase advice.

They are two of the top teams in Europe, Real Madrid and FC Barcelona(Barca). Check their schedules for your dates and book through team website or any number of other ticket sellers. You can take a tour of FC Barcelona’s and Real Madrid's stadiums as well.

La Liga (the main Spanish soccer league) schedules will not be released until July. Most La Liga matches are on either Saturday or Sunday afternoons.

There are also European and tournament (Copa del Rey) matches on some weekends, as well as occasional weekdays. These are usually considered somewhat inferior to La Liga matches, particularly Copa Del Rey.

Be warned: there are also international breaks, where all domestic and European teams go on break and players go back to their native countries to play exhibition matches against other countries. In Spain, most, if not all, of these international matches would be played in Madrid.

I know, it's confusing. The main thing to focus on is La Liga matches. Unfortunately those schedules don't come out until July, so you'll have to wait to see when and where the matches are.

Tickets are quite expensive for the biggest teams in Spain. I believe Barcelona and Real Madrid tickets run around 100 EUR apiece for decent seats.

Barcelona and Real Madrid are both world-class clubs. Barcelona are defending Spanish champions, while Real Madrid are defending European champions. Barcelona is usually seen as a symbol of Catalan independence, while Real Madrid is seen as a symbol of Francoist nationalism.

Hope this helps!

Went to a couple of games in Barcelona last year. Bought tickets on the FC Barcelona web site. Prices were much lower than many reseller sites. One game was mid week against against Eibar; good seats were easy to obtain. The other game was against Espanyol and the best seats were not available but we did ok as it was just two of us.

Caution: Schedule changes do occur. Eibar game was originally set for 9/20 but moved to 9/19. Lickily, we arrived that day in Barcelona from Sevila. Game was at night so it did not affect our plans but if we had arrived the next day, tickets would be worthless.

Great atmosphere at Camp Nou!!!! Stop by the Nike store too before going into the game.

I would also recommend Barcelona FC. While we were in the city on the Metro we met a young man working at Google in Germany that had attended a game at Camp Nou(sp?). He said it was incredible atmosphere and not as expensive as he thought. Otherwise if in Madrid, I'd go the Madrid Atletico. While not having star plays like Ronaldo, they are still fun to watch.

Where ever you attend you will realize just how football-mad the Spaniards can be.

I was in Madrid with my 21 year old son in Jan and we saw two La Liga matches - home matches for Athletico Madrid and Leganes. We purchased our tickets for the Leganes match through their website, but could not do the same with Athetico Madrid and eventually I had to call them to purchase the tickets. While Athletico Madrid was the best football team I have ever seen in person (previous games at Chelsea and Amsterdam Ajax) and their new stadium was awesome, both my son and I greatly preferred the lesser known team (Leganes). The small stadium and neighborhood crowd made the Leganes match the highlight of our entire trip. My point is that you may want to focus on the lesser known clubs as the tickets are easier and cheaper to buy and you probably will have much better seats. Even better, if the schedules work in your favor you might see Barca or Real Madrid as a visiting opponent at one of the other clubs in Barcelona (RCD Espanyol) or Madrid (Getafe or Leganes). La Liga website is best tool for monitoring upcoming schedules: http://www.laliga.es/en/calendar-time/laliga-123

Good luck!

In Madrid there is also Rayo Vallecano now in La Liga.

If you go Real Madrid's ground or meet a supporter, I wouldn't mention they are "seen as a symbol of Francoist nationalism"! Even if they are/were.

One last thing since you say October. The last week of October has been when they play the first leg matches of La Copa round when the big teams join in. By tradition, in this round the bigger team visits the smaller one first. So last year, Barça were playing at mighty Murcia for example. If that is when you are in Spain it is worth checking (and of course half the La Liga fixtures are also away too if you particularly want to visit the home ground).
