My wife and I stayed in the Hotel Plaza Mayor. It's listed in the RS 2013 Spain Guide Book, which is where we learned about it, and we really enjoyed it.. We stayed there three nights last year. Although it has 34 rooms (according to the RS book), which sounds large, it had a lot of charm and was surprisingly quiet for being that close to the Plaza. We hIghly recommended it.

Hostal Acapulco, Plaza Santa Anna, just off Gran Via is excellent. Two friends and I stayed there in September for several days and enjoyed it. There is a "lift" to its lobby. Good use of marble and granite in the rooms. Central location -one block from Gran Via, and two blocks from Puerta del Sol. Well maintained facility. Would definitely stay there again.

It's been several years, but we've stayed twice at the Hotel Preciados. This is gut-renovated wood, steel, and mirrors, rather than charming with age. But the price was good, and much quieter (double-glass windows) than the average Rick recommendation. Just as good location, within 8 minutes of Plaza Mayor, and a nearby subway stop. Churros are also walkable. Air conditioned, lovely buffet breakfast towards the high end.
