We will be flying to Malaga (via Madrid?) from the US in Sept or Oct. After a week with a walking group, we want to go to Granada and perhaps elsewhere. We will be looking into flights and/or trains/buses within country. What small airlines would you suggest? I know only of Ryannair.
Spanish airline is Iberia, Vueling is their discount. Renfe is the rail service.
Good starting points for transportation options include a Wikipedia search of airports which reveals the various carriers and also checking multiple transportation options on the Rome2Rio website.
I hope you're not planning on flying between Malaga and Granada, it's less than 100 km. But Spain has an excellent and extensive network of high speed trains, so there is usually no need to fly.
Take the bus to Granada from Malaga is the way to go.
I use Rome2rio.com to determine which mode of transportation makes the most sense. We've used Vueling several times with no problem. Here's a link to Rome2rio for the Madrid to Malaga route. https://www.rome2rio.com/map/Madrid-Airport-MAD/Malaga-Airport-AGP
Be advised that Iberia and Vueling are both British owned (majority shares), and if Brexit happens they will not be flying unless they can get an exception from the EU. Currently the EU is not looking favorably on this. The Spanish Gov't is rather concerned regarding this issue.
Thank you all for your suggestions!
International Airlines Group has head offices in Madrid (where it is registered) and London; the latter city is its centre of operations. Holdings: British Airways, Iberia, Aer Lingus, Vueling, Lift (which is an experiment in long-haul budget flights, with only a couple of aircraft, based in Barcelona.) The airlines appear to operate fairly independently although Vueling supplies some short-hop flights jointly with Iberia. (Sources: Wikipedia and IAG website.)
Most useful site for European airlines, in my opinion: www.skyscanner.com
