Skip Valencia?

We are flying into Barcelona. Are Valencia and the train along the east coast from Barcelona to Valencia worth the roundabout way to our first destination Granada?
Here's what we're considering:
Option A: Barcelona-Madrid-Granada
Option B: Barcelona-Valencia-Madrid-Granada
The benefit of Option A is more time in the other destinations but we would miss Valencia.
We finish with Lisbon/Porto/Madrid (in case you wondered)
14 total nights
We are really stumped on this one!
Thank you :)

Are you asking if it's worth to spend any time in Valencia? The east coast of Spain is very much worthwhile, one could easily spend two weeks just along the coastline between Valencia and Barcelona

Rick, you haven’t provided us any insight into your particular interests, or whether you have visited any of these cities before, but given your trip of 14 nights, given that you list 5 other major and wonderful cities, and given the very large amount of travel time to move among all these cities, either by land or by air, I would certainly encourage you to leave Valencia for another future trip. It’s nice, but I would clearly rate it #6 on this list, also behind Sevilla and Cordoba.
Many on this forum, and I would be among them, will likely suggest that you visit Spain and Portugal in two separate trips. Barcelona, Madrid and Lisbon certainly deserve several days each, even more if you want to visit some of the great smaller cities and towns near each of those cities. There are also many other exciting cities, towns and rural areas in both Spain and Portugal.

It sounds like you're going to Madrid twice, in the middle and at the end of your trip. And how are you getting from Granada to Lisbon?

I am really stumped by your plan.

That’s a lot of moving around with only 14 days total. To me, Valencia is worth a full day at most, meaning possibly two nights depending on the time you arrived in town. For the amount of time you have I’d spend that time elsewhere.

Valencia is a nice city, but it is not Barcelona, Madrid, Granada or Lisbon. With 14 nights you really don't have time even for those four heavy-hitters, given the annoying travel required to get to Lisbon and back to Madrid.

I like Portugal a lot; it's worth more time than you can give to it on this trip. I'd agree that if you're flying into Barcelona and home from Madrid, you'd really do a lot better to limit this trip to Spain. It's still tough to tell you to skip Seville and Cordoba!

Thank you for all the feedback. We have decided to drop Portugal and Valencia, and spend 3 in Barcelona, 4 in Madrid, and 7 in Andalusia (Seville and Granada w/day trips). The high-speed trains connecting these areas were a major factor in addition to learning more about Andalusia and the fact that we were spreading ourselves too thin.
Great advice from all.
In gratitude...

I have to respond to the title of this thread. We just came back from a 14 night Spain vacation (five nights Barcelona, four nights Valencia and five nights Madrid). I loved Valencia. If Barcelona and Madrid are comparable to Toronto or Montreal, Valencia is like Vancouver (where I live). It is a beautiful and laid-back city, less crowded and less expensive. There are lots of historical attractions and some very modern ones. We rented a tandem bike (wife cannot ride a bike on her own) and felt safe. I had planned to do the same thing in Barcelona, but found it too intimidating with the traffic. Orange trees, in November. We saw (one of) the Holy Grail and found the other, authentic paella Valenciana. Like all the places we visit, we wished we had more time to spend there. If you have kids, they would love Oceangrafic (we did) or Bioparc (not enough time).
Tips: Hotel Venecia Plaza Centro (with a view of the square) and El Porteño restaurant.

I think you're going to find you're really short on time in Barcelona, but that's not a big deal. It will be easy to return there--and you can go to Valencia on that trip!

Thank you all for your feedback. We decided on 16 days, starting in Barcelona for 4 nights, followed by a split between Valencia, Seville, Granada and then Madrid (in that order). The longer we planned the fewer the towns and more nights. Main focus was putting 6 nights in Andalusia. Thanks again everyone!
