I purchased tickets for the Sagrada Familia from the official Sagrada Familia website because I heard that was the safer way to get a ticket. However, I am seeing "skip the line tickets" advertised by websites like Viator.com. Does this mean I will have to wait in line for a long time before I am able to enter even with buying my ticket ahead of time? If so, how early should you get in line for a 1pm tour time?
If I remember correctly, your ticket should have a time stamp on it. They will not let you in before that time.
Right. But does this mean I’ll be waiting in line with people trying to buy tickets that day? So if my ticket is for 1pm, do I have to get in line so I’m at the front by 1pm? Does that make sense
No. People who already have timed tickets do not wait behind people who are trying to buy tickets. The "skip-the-line ticket" language is scammy. At nearly all sights, any timed ticket is a skip-the-line ticket.
You've done all you can to expedite entry into the church. There may be a bit of a wait because of crowd control, but I don't think you'll have a signficant issue. Showing up a little early will probably get you nearer the front of the line for people sharing your entry time.
As @acraven said, this is basically a marketing gimmick that just confuses people.
These days, most of Barcelona’s big attractions work more or less like this:
- You need to buy your ticket in advance online. Some places don’t even sell tickets on-site anymore.
- You pick a time slot, usually something like 10:00–10:30.
- You show up before the slot entry time, say 10-15' before, and there’s a “to enter” line with people who have the same time slot. It’s usually pretty short because they cap capacity for safety regulations.
- At your time, the line starts moving. It’s smooth and quick.
- Once inside, you can stay as long as you want. That said, most places are designed a bit like IKEA, with a natural flow that keeps people moving forward. No rush, but no hanging around forever or going backwards either. It actually makes the visit easy and comfortable, no crazy crowding.
- If the place still sells tickets at the door, there are two separate lines: one to buy tickets, another to enter at your assigned time. And heads up, because of demand, you might show up and the next available slot is hours later, or even the next day/days. That’s why buying online in advance is always the safer bet.
Enjoy!
