Six weeks in Spain/Portugal in May/June 2025

Hello fellow travellers!
We have booked an 8 day walk in Portugal and want to spend the rest of the time mostly in Spain (plus say another 5 days in Portugal). My problem is the Travel Local guide has come up with an itinerary that covers the north and south of Spain but staying in places for only 2 days. This will be exhausting! Based on your experience what are the must see places considering we are more into nature, culture and food than galleries and cathedrals although I do want to see the major museums.
We are arriving and departing from Barcelona and aim to train, private transfer and maybe also hire a car for segments.
Please help, I'm all ears!
Thank you,
Sarah

Congratulations on 6 weeks. Part of the answer lies transportation. When we visit Spain we have a rental car and tend to stay in locations for three days at most. From any location there are only a few places one can day trip to before the traveling distance to get to them becomes onerous. Move to the next location, take day trips, repeat.

Getting to many nature locations requires a vehicle since they are way off the beaten path in remote locations. Some we’ve enjoyed include, Parque Natural Cañón del Río Lobos, Foz de Lumbier, Camino Natural del Rio Guadalaviar, Picos de Europa, and Natural Monument Los Barruecos.

Only you know what constitutes a must see site for you.

Your basic itinerary has you traveling all over the Iberian Peninsula so you really should narrow the focus of your trip to a smaller area, figure out which locations are of interest to you, whether you want to stay in large, medium, small cities, or towns and villages. Once you know that, then you can check the surrounding areas to see nature areas are around it.

Thanks Jaime for your insight. Yes I agree transport is the key and that's what I've been struggling with as we can't drop off a car or campervan in Portugal from Spain while we do our 8 day hike and friends have said the trains are good so thought we could do a mix? Big issue too is what to leave out!! Since we are coming from Australia we want to make the most of our time but not be unpacking/packing every two days!
