Sitges, Spain to Pezenas, France and back to Barcelona - drive or take train?

I fly in and out of BCN. I'm going to a wedding in Pezenas, France, in Languedoc.

I was interested in spending two days at Sitges at the beginning of my trip.

It seems as though I'm going to have to rent a car in France regardless, probably Montpellier.

How horrible is suburban Barcelona traffic if I pick up my car when I first arrive at BCN, enjoy two days at Sitges, and then try to go around the city to get to France?

My other thought was to take a interior route bordering the Pyrenees.

Which route would be more scenic, through the mountains near Andorra or along the coast?

It also appears that drop-off charges are much larger if I drop off the car in France. Perhaps I would return the car on the eastern outskirts of Barcelona on the way back for my return flight - take the train into town for my final hotel night so I'm not dealing with the worries of car return just before my flight. Thoughts?

Or am I better off skipping all of this and just using the trains while in Spain? Thanks.

Sitges is extremely easy to reach from Barcelona via public transportation, so I'd explore options for picking up a car just over the border in France when you're ready to head for the wedding. That would mean you'd need to return the car in France, as well. If that's not what you want to do, you might consider picking up and dropping off the car in the charming and historic small city of Girona, which has frequent and fast rail connections to Barcelona.

You answered your own question.

  1. Take the train to Sitges on arrival, about 45mins from Sants Station. You won't need a car here, just a sun hat, some flip flops and a love of seafood and crisp dry white wine.

  2. Take the train back to Sants, then get a high speed service to Narbonne (or Montpellier), and pick up a car here for Pezenas.

  3. If you are planning time on the Costa Brava, then do it on the way back to BCN, picking up a car in Girona.
