Single Day Tourist Travel Card for Long Layover in Madrid?

My family will be in Madrid with 9 hours between arrival (from USA) and departure (to Italy). I feel like that is enough time to get out of the airport for a bit of fresh air, a churro and an empanada... besides letting the kids get some energy out. Please correct me if that is not enough time.

Assuming it is, is the 1 day tourist travel card worth it for such a quick jaunt from the airport and back? There are 7 of us, 3 under 11 which I thought I saw a discount for. Or shall we just purchase single fare metro tickets?

I can't imagine tackling art museums after an overnight flight, and I love art. If you're thinking about some kind of tourist card that includes a sightseeing component, I would discourage that. I'd get transportation into the city and plan to use the jetlag-fighting technique of walking around outdoors. Rick has a walking tour laid out in his book. The tourist office offers guided walking tours, but I'm not sure what time they depart. Your kids may be a bit too young for those, especially after a night on the plane.

A trip to the San Miguel Market near the historic center may be helpful; you'll be on a weird eating schedule after the flight. San Miguel is a touristy sort of place, not a cheap option, but it may be what you need on arrival day. I don't remember a churro stand inside the market.

Retiro Park is large and free. It's near Atocha Station. There's a nice botanical garden nearby, but there's a fee to enter that. That's where I spent a couple of hours on my arrival day in 2016. But with young children, I think Retiro would probably be better since they'd be able to run around.

You'll need a place to stash carry-on bags, yes? One option is Atocha Station. I have not used the luggage-storage facilities there and cannot tell you how long drop-off and pick-up will take. If you decide to head there, a train or the airport bus may be more convenient than dealing with the subway from the airport. I assume there won't be taxi-vans at the airport that would accommodate 7 people, else that would probably be an economical choice for your group.

Thanks for the replies.

We are looking just for things we can explore on foot, preferably outdoors. I had looked at Retiro Park and planned on that unless other items came up that sounded more interesting.

The card we were looking at was travel only, not for sites and looked like it would be 17 euro per person with 50% discount for the 3 little ones, so 93 euro for all day transport for the seven of us. Not sure what the single fares would cost, looks like about 2 euros each with a bit more for the airport (one site indicated 4.50 euro, unless I was looking at the wrong thing)? So say 7 euros per person each way that's 98 euros, which is why I'm curious about the travel cards. Am I missing something in the math here?

Actually, looking at the Madrid Metro website, it looks like it maxes out at a 5 euro from the airport for a single ticket, but can a single ticket per person get us from the airport to Retiro Park or Puerta Del Sol? I thought there was a change in Nuevos Ministerios to head on to Sol... does that not incur another single ticket?

Cabs between Barajas Airport and anywhere in the center of Madrid are a 30-euro flat fee. You need two cabs, so that's 120 euros round trip. To me that's better value than 93 euros worth of transportation cards or even 70 euros of single fares (which include transfers, by the way), given the jet-lag factor.
You also need to look at luggage storage options at the airport.
