SIM / Mobile in Spain

Hi

Would like to get some guidance on whether I should get a SIM for my current US iphone or a just buy a new mobile with SIM once I land in Spain?
My own preference is to go for the latter - I understand it is bit cheaper. I only need it to communicate with my friends in Spain via text and local calls.

thanks
Krish

I bought a SIM card in Barcelona last summer and had no problems with it. It was super cheap (I think 20 Euros for the month I was there). I never ran out of call time or data and had unlimited texting. I used Orange, I believe, but Vodaphone retail stores are everywhere. The coverage was very good too.

A SIM alone will be cheaper than a phone plus a SIM. If you already have an unlocked iPhone, just get a Spanish SIM. If your phone is locked, you have to buy a phone in Spain (not expensive for a "dumbphone," which is all you need for calls and texts).

Krish,

I purchased an inexpensive 'Lebara' SIM card in Madrid last Fall for my phone, & I didn't have any issues with it.

You can check some of their options here:http://www.lebara.es/?isoCode=en_GB

You should be able to buy a local SIM card for your phone, at any cell phone shop in Spain.

Just make sure your phone is unlocked by your cell phone provider, otherwise, any local SIM card will not work.

Yoigo do good deals.
Buy a tarjeta prepago (pay as you go sim)

Someone I know bought a simple phone for 40 euros with 40 euros credit (at yoigo)

You can also get data

We used Vodaphone SIM cards in our unlocked iPhones. The staff at the Vodaphone stores are great and you are up and running in no time. We paid about 20 Euro and got lots of data which was really helpful for looking up for information etc as well as making calls and texting.
