Shipping a small gift to Spain from the US

We wanted to send a small gift (a $10 value) to someone in Spain from the US. From reading comments on reddit it looks like maybe its a huge hassle (paperwork and maybe a fee due to customs) for the receiver. Can anyone vouch if this is the case. I certainly wouldnt want to send something to someone if it's going to cost them with time and potentially money.

Shouldn’t you check with something like FedEx to get accurate cost and information….

This is on the receiving side. I am wondering about the process once it arrives in Spain

It’s probably more trouble than it’s worth and that’s assuming it wouldn’t get misplaced by the Spanish postal service. When I looked at shipping something to Spain (FedEx, UPS, DHL) the paperwork alone seemed like a hassle. I can’t say it would be worth it for a $10 gift.

Sorry, no info for Spain, but we have shipped to friends in Europe a few times and it is not a smooth process.

Once we sent via the postal service to Italy and the package sat in Milan for a while - 2 weeks if I recall. The package contained small Christmas gifts - a low dollar value Christmas ornament and some Hershey’s chocolates; our friends love Hersheys.

Second try with DHL went great, again until it hit Italy. For this, lots of paperwork and then tax on the cost of the items. No tax on the first package.

Package sent to friends in the Netherlands (postal service) took a month and literally went via Taiwan - (we live on the Gulf Coast). I really do not think that was the most direct route the Netherlands, but that is what happened.

We have shipped from Italy to the US and from The Netherlands to the US with absolutely no problems - packages beat us home and were in pristine condition, but going from “here to there” has been challenging.

I have sent myself boxes valued at $100 or less multiple times from various places abroad using Mailboxes Etc (which somewhat surprisingly can be found abroad, at least in France and Italy), and have never had to do or pay anything related to Customs. I will say that doing so is not cheap (this past month I sent a box home from Nice, France and it cost me about $100) but if you’re collecting souvenirs as you travel as I do (like olive oil and ceramics, which are a pain to travel with if you’re making multiple stops and spending several weeks or longer) it’s money well spent IMO.
I ‘m not sure it would be worth it, though, to just ship a $10 gift. Can’t you just take it home and give it to them when you’re back?

Just wondering, has the gift already bought?

Could you try to buy it on Amazon.es for example and have it shipped inside of Spain?

It's not something available on Amazon. Will have to do more research. It seems the issue is customs for incoming packages in Spain.

I have mailed two packages to Spain. It is not fun. You will need to fill out a customs form, basically listing everything that is in the box and its value. The first package, literally took two months. Customs slip was not correct and sat in Chicago for a month. That package came home and I redid the paperwork and it was in Spain within 2 weeks. This box they(Spain friends) did not have to pay a fee to accept (probable because they saw the original date and the condition of the box!). But the second box, smaller in size and money value but it cost them about $25 for them to get it. I have mailed two letters and no problem but I will probably not mail a box again. Going to Germany was easy. Good luck!

Update. We ended up mailing the item thru the post office. Filled out the paperwork and declared the value as $10. It took about 2 weeks and we were able to track the package all the way to delivery to final destination.
