Seville with an 8 month-old

My wife, to-be 8mo, and I are joining a family trip to Seville this November.
There will be 10-15 ppl, spanning 4 generations and we are staying in apartments.

At this point, I'm looking for feedback on:

1) Flights

Do we fly Denver to Seville (via Frankfurt and return via Munich) OR

Denver to Madrid (via Newark and return via Montreal) + take the train to Seville?

Both itineraries are 1-stop with short layoevers. Flying into Madrid is cheaper, but flying into Seville would be simpler.

At 8-mo, we are leaning towards booking the infant her own seat and bringing our Doona (car seat-stroller combo) as she will likely size out of the bulkhead bassinet.

2) Things to do in/around Seville:
We don't have major goals for this trip, just to spend the time in Spain with family. The early list includes:

  • Food tour on Day 1 or 2 (we love a good food tour from a local early in the trip)
  • Alcazar Seville Cathedral (combo ticket with Iglesia Colegial del Salvador)
  • Day trips to Cordoba and Ronda

Are there any local festivals in November?
Other recommendations for restaurants, cafes, infant-friendly ideas?

3. What else?

Things to consider, tips/tricks travelling internationally with an 8mo?

We've done 2 different round trip flights this summer within the states, so we have some travel experience flying with our baby girl, but this will be the first international trip for her first-time parents. :)

For the Seville part, I’d keep it quite simple. You are not going somewhere difficult or “adventurous” with a baby. Seville is a very civilised, family-oriented city with pharmacies, supermarkets, taxis, good medical care, plenty of cafés/restaurants and everything you would normally expect in a major European city. Travelling there with an 8-month-old is not fundamentally different from travelling domestically within the US, apart from the longer journey and having passports involved.

Your plan is already enough. Alcázar/Cathedral, a food tour early on, lots of wandering, Triana, Plaza de España and Parque de María Luisa. Córdoba is an excellent day trip by fast train. I’d treat Ronda as optional, especially with 10–15 people and four generations. The danger here is probably overplanning rather than running out of things to do.

I also wouldn’t worry much about finding specifically “infant-friendly” restaurants. Babies are very normal in restaurants in Spain. The bigger issue will be fitting 10–15 people around one table, so reserve the meals where everyone wants to eat together and otherwise split into smaller groups.

November is generally a very pleasant time for Seville. November 1 is All Saints’ Day, a public holiday, if your dates overlap it, but there is no major city-wide festival comparable to Semana Santa or Feria.

One practical point: Seville is very walkable, but there are cobbles and uneven paving in parts of the historic centre. The Doona may be perfectly workable, but for long days walking around I’d consider whether you want something a bit more comfortable as your main stroller.

And with such a large multigenerational group, I would not try to keep everyone together all day. Seville is ideal for splitting up, doing different things and meeting again for lunch or dinner.

Enjoy!
