Seville to Granada and back in one day?

We're going to have 3 weeks in Seville, and we are planning day trips to Cordoba and Cadiz. I'm thinking we might want to go to Granada on a day trip also. But it's a 3 hour train ride from Seville to Granada, so that would be 6 hours on a train in one day. Have you ever done this? Do you think it's do-able? Advisable? What is your opinion?

Personally, I don't think it would be enjoyable at all. In addition to spending 6 hours on the train, you need to factor in time to get to the Alhambra. You shouldn't rush through the Alhambra. This is a magnificent site that should be savored and enjoyed. We spent 3/4 of a day at the Alhambra visiting the outstanding Nasrid Palace, the Generalife Gardens, and the Alcazaba, and also having lunch. Then we returned for a magical night-time visit.

Since you will be spending 3 weeks in Seville, why not spend 2 of those nights in Granada? This way you have a more leisurely visit of the Alhambra; you can take the night tour if interested; and also enjoy Granada. There are other interesting sites in Granada, and it's fun to explore the Albayzin, the oldest neighborhood in Granada.

Granada is not a good day trip. You will not have time to see the Alhambra properly and explore the city. I would at least make Granada an overnight.

Thanks for the advice, guys. I'm going to rule out a day trip to Granada from Seville.
