What is the best way to travel from Seville to Barcelona? Plane or train? Time is more important than cost unless it's a significant difference which I don't think it is. Thanks!
It's probably a toss-up. Take into account the carry-on limits for flights - will you have to check luggage and wait for it in Barcelona? Most of the time, both check-in and baggage collection are fast, so you save an hour if there are no flight or baggage delays. But you'll have the hassles of flying. The trains are comfortable, you can walk around, relax, enjoy the scenery.
Thank you. Do we take th AVE train?
The highspeed AVE train is about 5 hours or so. The train station in Sevilla is a little outside the city center so there is some time to get there and AVE trains do require a minor security check-in.
To fly (door to door) will be about the same total amount of time. Maybe an hour less if you can do just carry-on luggage.
I would weigh the decision on schedule and convenience. Plus you can see scenary from the train.
we will be flying in about 10 days. As stated elsewhere the time is not significantly different. When we purchased our tickets on Vueling they were 35 euros each which was a fair amount less than the AVE if I remember.
I just looked at prices - right now, Seville-Barcelona shows a promo fare of €58.30 for September 5 (that's as far out as Renfe is selling them now). Ryanair has two flights that day, at 6.30 am (€41.11) and 7.20 am (€57.61) base fare. Vueling has more flights a day, from €60-90 for that day. But the airlines sell tickets further out than the trains, so you can get €35 base fares.
If you're planning to travel a month from now, prices may vary widely.
In addition to the prices Chani posted, remember the other costs:
Train: getting to and from the train stations at each end (bus, taxi, or metro).
Plane: getting to and from each airport (bus or taxi). Checked luggage. Any other extras (like using a credit card).
For instance, if you will be taking a taxi to each airport and checking bags, the train may still work out cheaper. And if you are taking buses to and from the airports, the train may work out faster.
Thank you. This is very helpful. We won't be travelling until October so I will take a look at the schedules when they become available. I like the idea of the train because coming from Canada we don't take the train often. I love this forum. I plan all of my trips to Europe based on advise from all of you. Thank you so much!
Read this article - everything you need to know about trains in Spain. Tickets usually go on sale about 60 days in advance - but the website is erratic. Sometimes trains that run every day don't show up until a week ahead, sometimes tickets are on sale 3 months or more in advance. There are limited quantities of promo fare tickets, prices will only go up if you wait. You can get an idea of ticket prices by looking at the relevant trains (day of the week, time of day) for trains that are currently on sale.
The AVE trains are very comfortable. You can bring food and drink on board and have a picnic lunch or dinner. It's much more relaxing than flying.
I took at taxi from Santa Cruz (a short walk from the Cathedral) to the Santa Justa (main) train station in March this year for €8. I also paid €20 for a taxi from near the Placa de Catalunya to Sants train station, but it was morning rush hour.
