Seville or Barcelona with mixed age kids

Hi.

We are planning to spend 2 weeks in Spain over the Christmas and New Year's break this year. We will be traveling with three children ages 21, 17, and 7. We like all of the usual things - museums, cultural attractions, historical attractions, and good food (especially tapas). Given the time of year and the holidays, I think it would be easiest to rent a house/apt in one city and make day trips from there. If we had to, we could keep our home base and travel to spend one or two nights away (if we were to go to Granada, for example). I am torn as to which city to choose. Is there one city that would be more fun given that it is the holiday season? What about the crowds or the weather? Both cities seem to have lots of options for day trips, but does one stand out over the other?

Thanks for your help,

KSH

Well, if you see my home city in my profile you'll realize my answer might not be the most unbiased of them all :)))

... so instead of trying to convince you directly, I'll just drop a few links which I feel might help you to decide: http://www.barcelonaturisme.com/ || http://www.infocatalonia.eu || http://www.timeout.com/barcelona || http://lameva.barcelona.cat/en || http://www.catalunya.com/?language=en

and for day escapades: GIRONA -- FIGUERES -note this and Girona are very close -- SITGES -- MONTSERRAT -- TARRAGONA -- VIC -- BESALÚ -- ROSES -- TOSSA DE MAR... and this of course it's just a sample of day escapades one can do from Barcelona on train or bus noting that almost everything in Catalonia is at 3-4h tops from its capital Barcelona, located in the middle of the nation (give or take, lol!) and the choice is varied, from quaint picturesque coastal villages to historical towns, national parks and mountain ranges (+10.000ft), all at a relatively short distance.

Weather-wise, Barcelona is a coastal city in the Mediterranean therefore the winter is mild enjoying temperatures of between 60F (day) and 40F (night) in December, not bad huh? Sadly though, if you expect a 'white Christmas' Barcelona it's bound to disappoint you because we hardly have any snow, our winters tend to be rather dryish (little rain) and very sunny -the city has an average of +2500 hours of sun each year. Daylight for December days is an impressive 9h.

With 2 weeks, I'd divide it up between them. Barcelona has much more than Seville, more day trips too. Seville's day trips are Jerez and Cordoba. Anything else is too far for a convenient day trip. I'd say 2-3 nights Granada (the Alhambra is the top sight in Spain for a reason), 3-4 nights Seville with a day trip to Cordoba (the Mezquita is the second best Spanish sight) and 7 days or more in Barcelona. Bus or train between Seville and Granada, flight between Granada and Barcelona.

Thanks for the replies.

Chani, not sure we want to travel between the two during this trip. It is long and expensive with 5 of us. We'll probably have to do two separate trips to see Barcelona and Seville. The consensus seems to be that there is more to do in Barcelona. I do want to see the Al Hambra though.

Ahh KSH... life is tough, ain't it? One can't have everything :))

PS. But the closest you'll be to total happiness (as in 'many things to choose from') is, obviously, in Barcelona... where else? hahaha!

Thank you, Enric. I do appreciate that we are fortunate enough to be contemplating such a decision.

What about 5-7 days outside the city? Valencia sounds nice (haven't been yet) and probably cheaper than Barcelona, which will offset your train costs. Or a small place and rent a car to tootle around Catalunya. I'm thinking that might be my next trip.
