Sevilla and Ronda Recommendations

We have 14 days to spend in the Andalucia area. We are planning on heading to Sevilla after spending time in Extremadura in early April. We were thinking in Sevilla to spend several nights and do a few day trips from there. Looking at Santiponce, Carmona, El Rocio and maybe spend a day in the Donana National Park.

Can Santiponce and Carmona be combined for a single day? They didnt look to be far from Sevilla.

Any other day trips we should consider?

From Sevilla we were thinking of heading to Ronda for a few nights. We would like to explore the Pueblo Blancos (Grazalema, Zahara ..)
Is it better to explore the Pueblo Blancos from Sevilla en route to Ronda ? Or should we head to Ronda and then explore the towns from Ronda? I was thinking the later. I also am not sure we want to drive ourselves since the driver really can't enjoy the drive as much with having to focus on the road - so does anyone have recommendations for a tour out of Ronda ? I saw lots from Sevilla but didnt see any from Ronda.

We will probably head to Malaga and Granada after Sevilla and Ronda.

Thanks In Advance

For the white villages, if you intend to stay in Ronda for a few days, then you could visit a couple places en route, then take day trips. Grazalema and Zahara de la Sierra are close to Ronda as is Setenil de las Bodegas. From Sevilla you could either drive down to Arcos de la Frontera to start your villages tour or, head over to Olivera then down to Ronda.

"Can Santiponce and Carmona be combined for a single day? They didnt look to be far from Sevilla."

Theoretically, yes. And certainly if you have a car - although that brings added problems in terms of pick-up / drop-off in Sevilla. If planning to use public transport, there is

(a) a regular bus services between central Sevilla and Santiponce, use the M170 run by Seville province local bus operator CTAS. M170A is the express service. I think it stops just outside the Italica entrance assuming that's where you're going (or taxi wouldn't be dear either);

and
(b) a regular coach service between central Sevilla and Carmona.

What, I'm not sure about is if there is a direct bus service between Santiponce and Carmona. So you may need to go back into Seville to change - which likely means doing both by bus in one day impractical.

Also, you didn't ask but, with apologies:

i) 14 days is a good amount of time, but don't spread yourself too thin. You mention Ronda, Malaga and Granada plus time in the white towns and several day-trip possibilities from Sevilla. I'm biased, of course, but I think Sevilla itself is worth a minimum of three full days. There is a lot to see.
ii) On the other hand, you didn't mention Cordoba. That's one of Andalucia's highlights. Whilst worth longer, you can easily see a bit of it as a day-trip from Seville. Or you could include as part of a trip from Sevilla to Ronda/Malaga.
iii) I'm presuming Santiponce is included to mainly see Italica? It is fine and the amphitheatre very good. But for a lot of the rest of the site, it is a bit "only okay", in my opinion. Ampitheatre apart, you'll see better ruins in Extremadura and, after all, Malaga also has an amphitheatre (but not as good as the Italica one, admitedly). If you've never seen a Roman town ruin, Italica is good. But if you've previously been to Pompeii or Ostia Antica, then you might be less "wowed".

@nick In all we have 5 weeks in Spain. We plan on renting a car in Madrid and then heading to Extremadura and Andalucia. I have allotted about 14 days for Andalucia . We are staying 5 nights in Sevilla and 3 nights in Ronda.

  • We will be in the Extremadura area for a good bit of time prior to heading to Sevilla
  • Was looking for a few day trips out of Sevilla so that is why I mentioned Santiponce (yes to see the ruins ) and Carmona. It looked like with a car we could see both in a day. I was also thinking about visiting Donana National Park from Sevilla (we will be there in early April so I am hoping we have good weather)
  • I thought when we leave Sevilla we could head to Ronda and pass thru a few of the white towns (from @jaimeelsabio he suggested via Arcos or Olivera) not sure how long either of those routes will take -In Ronda maybe venture to Grazalema , or Zahara de la Sierra or Setenil de las Bodegas not sure which
  • From Ronda we will head to the Malaga area for a few days and then onto Granada and finally head back to Madrid for takeoff
  • I have considered Cordoba but it didn't seem like a good day trip from Sevilla, Ronda, or Malaga since the drive time was 1 hour+. I thought maybe on our way back to Madrid we could stop there.
