September/October Clothing

Leaving in a week & very excited to see Spain for the first time!

For packing, I've selected 4 tops, 2 capris & a cute black dress that works for day or night. (Bringing 2 scarves & a necklace) Also, I have a couple of 3/4 sleeve nicer tops & a pair of long black pants. I'm taking a black very light raincoat & a loosely woven lightweight black cardigan. The black sweater has been good during past trips to Italy to provide a little warmth when we're eating late in the evenings or to wear with the black dress to an opera.

I'm debating whether to also bring a thin fleece jacket to wear in the mornings before it warms up each day; I would wear it on the plane, too. For the travelers who have been to Madrid, Seville, Granada, etc. in late September/early October, did you need a lightweight jacket?

I did not, in the case of a Spain tour that started on Oct. 7 and felt like about 80 degrees every day. I think your other layers will be adequate. For comparison, the Madrid forecast at 9:00 a.m. tomorrow is a couple of degrees warmer than when I left the house this morning in a t-shirt.

With a cardigan, do you really need 2 3/4 sleeve tops?
I use this website for historical weather data. It is Seville in September 2016. You can look back as far as you want and change to your locations. It looks like even in Seville evenings cool off, so you might get tired of the one sweater; but don't know the length of your trip.

Hi Maria,

Thanks for the link to the weather data. I've been checking my Dark Sky app which gives the hour-by hour, and it looked like the coolest time-of-day when we'd be out will be the first 1-2 hours in the morning.

We'll be in Spain for 22 days. I usually change clothes before we go out for the evening because I've been walking all day and ready to switch into something clean and a little nicer for a restaurant, etc. I was hoping the 3/4 sleeves & the open-weave sweater would take care of the evenings.

In October, we'll be at Ronda, Granada, Nerja/Frigiliana & Malaga.

Hi Jean,
I'm also leaving in a week for a 1st time visit to Spain. I'm getting excited also and have started packing. Thanks for your questions and for the responses.

To avoid lugging a coat in spring/autumn, I carry ...
•a lightweight knitted sweater
•a lightweight nylon waterproof
Worn together both achieve insulation and protection if you strike a particularly chilly patch.

Jean,

I didn't wear a jacket when visiting the cities you'll be visiting (late Sept- Mid October) until we arrived to Toledo ( end of our trip) where it was chilly in the mornings & evenings. Your best bet is to check the weather a couple of days prior to your departure date.

Have an amazing trip!

And my best recollection of October in Sevilla was walking around at 10 p.m. in short sleeves -- so keep checking the weather forecast until the day before you leave.

In my experience ...
October = Luck
Mostly I've been lucky.
However, always prepare to be unlucky.
More a case of Spanish summer than Indian summer.

Thank you for all of your replies!

I've decided that I'm going to wear the jacket on the plane since I'm always cold on the plane, and the raincoat wasn't that comfortable to wear on the plane last year. I like to sleep with a thin pillow, so I might also use it during the trip as a pillow. I have room in my suitcase (a very bad reason!) , and it could cushion my one planned souvenir, a ceramic piece! ; )

I'm wondering if you would possibly need it in Ronda as it's at a higher elevation. Another option would be to leave it and go shopping at El Corte Inglés or Zara if it turns out you need one. :)

We are also leaving for an 18 day trip to Spain on Sept 26 and visiting Barcelona, Madrid, Toledo, Seville, Arcos, Ronda, Nerja, Granada by Plane, train and car. I follow Joan's and Ricks packing for women and last year, as this year I bring one light weight summer dress, 2 dark capri pants, 2 sleeveless silk shirts (brighter colours), 2 short sleeve nicer t-shirts, 2 long sleeve nicer t-shirts, a short black light knit sweater (for the dress and to wear as a layering piece in evening), a light grey cashmere cardigan for layering, a very light grey very light weight down vest, a light grey very light (ounces) puffer jacket. Thats it, and walking shoes etc, flats, sandals. I also bring a swim suit. I bring a very light (only for rain emergencies) waterproof rain jacket which fits over all the layers if needed. I wish I had it 2 years ago in Portugal. I found that I wore all of the above and while I anticipate it being warmer than cooler, the dress and sleeveless silk tops and sweaters for sun protection and cooler times of day will work for me. We haven't been to most of Spain (only Madrid) before so looking forward to it!! Have a great trip and your clothing choices sound great. If your 3/4 length tops are summer weight, light material you should be fine.
Cheers, Susanne

Just an update from lovely Toledo, Spain! I brought the lightweight fleece jacket and definitely needed it both on the planes and walking around early morning. By late morning, it's left in our hotel room and the evening is still warm, so no jacket needed.

Thanks for the great discussion! I was planning to pack my heavy leather jacket. Looks like I won't need it if I make it by October.
