Senior or Retired Discounts in Spain

What age is considered being a Retired Pensioner or Senior in Spain for Museums, Tourist sites and Public Transit. RENFE offers a senior discount at age 60. How about Public transit in Madrid and Barcelona? What age is a Senior for Sagrada Familia , The Alhambra, or various Museums. Anyone know the definitive answer?

There was an earlier thread on precisely this subject back in 2014. It looks worth reviewing while we wait to see whether there's anyone around with up-to-the-minute experience.

I'm heading to Spain myself in a week, and my preliminary reading indicates that the minimum age is generally 65 except for RENFE. However, a guidebook I read last week indicated quite a lot of museums in southern France use 60 as their age for determining senior-discount eligibility.

Senior discounts made on a particular site don't have to necessarily match status of retiree thus the answer to what's the age of retirement: 65. The answer to at what age does this or that applies, that'll depend on the particular museum/site so you need to check with them. Having said that, THE AGE OF RETIREMENT IS 65. Period :))

Note though that in many places, proof that you're retired is done with a special card (ie. in Barcelona is the "pink card"). This means that some senior discounts won't apply to you because you're not a resident of that city (thus you don't have that card).

A few sights give seniors a discount only if they are EU (or maybe Spanish) residents. Most are for anyone who's reached their 65th birthday. In those cases any photo ID with proof of age is accepted - US drivers license is fine. The DL is also sufficient for the Renfe tarjeta dorada.

Unlike the rest of Europe we found that senior discounts were given at museums, trains etc to anyone of the age -- usually 60 or 65. In Italy these are only accorded to EU residents and the same is true in France, although at private museums and exhibits sometimes they accord them to anyone of the age.

Spain was the big exception; they gave senior rates to seniors everywhere we went.
