We will be in Sevilla during Semana Santa and would like to try to attend a bull fight. It is our understanding that there will be a bull fight on Easter Sunday. The website that Rick lists does not yet have any info about the 2016 season and
Google searches are not turning up any information. Rick states that you can purchase tickets a few minutes before show time. But with this being Semana Santa, we would like opinions and any helpful information about purchasing tickets ahead of time and the best way to go about it if needed.
'opinions and any helpful information'
Ensure all of your party are aware of what to expect, after reading on the subject on-line, not in a guide book, and viewing YouTube videos. The last time I was at a corrida I saw one of your compatriots physically sick and several leaving very upset after the first 'fight'. There are surely better ways of spending your €uros than watching this torture.
"Before show time" - Really??
Perhaps it is because of ethical reasons that you are finding information difficult to come by - no tour company would probably wish to be associated with bull 'fighting' these days.
Jeanine,
here is the webpage for the bullring in Sevilla, http://www.plazadetorosdelamaestranza.com/
It seems that the abonos or season ticket holders get first pick of the tickets at the end of February (27, 28, 29) then the new season ticket holders, then the individual corridas.
There will be bull fights from 3 to 17 of April.
Remember, seats in the sun are cheaper than seats in the shade - pay the extra price for the shady side Second, as part of the culture do not leave your seat during the actual bull fight. It is consider disrespectful to the Matador. Use the restroom between fights. Whether you attend or not will have no impact on the performance. It will go on. There is a lot of pageantry, color, ritual, cultural tradition associated with the fight. We saw one in Madrid. Personally I thought it was worth seeing but once was enough. Have no desire to go back. After the first three bulls, the score was tied. The bull won one, the Matador one and one was a tie. But in the end the bull always loses. The second Matador for the final three bulls was much better. All three bulls lost.
Read this guide to bullfighting. The link provided by dlind does indeed show the first date of the season to be Easter Sunday, March 27.
Ah Janine I guess you didn't know that the rick steves gang tends towards the politically correct crowd. Bull fighting is an iconic part of Spanish history and culture and it's understandable one would want to participate maybe not fully understanding the gore, I know I didn't until I saw video. Anyone know of any trends toward more humane bullfights where it's more showmanship than blood? That would seem the logical evolution
I believe the Portuguese bull fights do not kill the bull. But I don't know it it is blood-less or not.
I'm sure because of animal rights concerns Bullfighting is not as popular as in the past, but the bullring in Sevilla holds 14,000 people. It sells out. Many who don't attend the bull fights watch them on TV. There are bull bars throughout the country. I take exception to people who criticize this culture, then turn around and have a nice juicy beef steak for dinner. Or eat a Big Mac. Only vegetarians have a right to criticize. Do you have any idea what goes on in the massive meat packing plants in America?
Trying to bridge the gap between cultural sensitivity and new world thinking, help me out Ray!
susan63,
'Bull fighting is an iconic part of Spanish history and culture' - not so. Bull fighting is an iconic part of Andalucian history and culture and about three hundred years old in it's modern format. About one half of several hundred bullrings were built during the Franco era (after 1936) in parts of the country where there was absolutely no interest, imposed to promote a concept of Spanish machismo.
For showmanship with bulls anyone interested may want to google 'Recortes'.
A few posts were removed to help keep this thread polite and on topic (our first two Community Guidelines). The animal cruelty vs cultural event debate is very worthy, but hijacking someone's legitimate travel question isn't the best way to go about it in this forum. Thanks to everyone for your understanding.
