This is my first time in Spain celebrating Semana Santa in Malaga and I am so in awe. What an incredible experience. The pageantry, the amazing thrones, the processions winding thru the streets. It's been the highlight of our trip.
It really is a wonderful experience - I still remember my first time experience it almost 20 years ago. We saw it in several places as we were moving around, but each one was incredible.
And it´s just started...it´s celebrated in many parts of Spain in very different ways, as there are also live reenactions of the last days of Christ in many towns, with people of the towns as amateur actors. Semana Santa processions in the north are more solemn, while in the south they are more vivid.
Yes I had no idea the extent of these processions. I am glad we have witnessed them in Ronda, Malaga and soon to be Granada. As well when visiting local churches throughout Spain we have been able to see the parishes putting on the final touches on their thrones. It may not be for everyone but I highly recommend this.
Yes, they are such a rich and impressive experience to witness! I saw them a couple years back in Seville and Malaga. Both were great, of course, but I appreciated having a bit more breathing room and relief from crowds in Malaga.
