We would like to see Segovia and Avila. Not sure where the best place to stay to see both cities and the palace. Any suggestions would be great. We have two days. Day of arrival and the next full day

Does this refer to time in Madrid, or 2 days to get out of??
From Madrid I would start early with a train to Avila, spend the day and then early evening bus to Segovia.
Spend the night in Segovia, see the sights the following day, before a late (high speed) train back to Madrid.

Or you can take the bus the entire trip. We did that. Less to see and do in Avila. Bused to Avila for lunch, walked the wall, and no to Segovia for evening/overnight. Left Segovia late PM the next day back to Madrid. The bus stations are handy.
