Seeking Driving Tips - Madrid to Lekeitio (Basque Region) and other info

We just booked a hotel in Lekeitio in early September - 5 days. The first day we will be traveling from Madrid.
Any preferred routes or suggestions? Must-see towns or great stops for lunch?

Once there, I am figuring day 1 as a travel/arrive day, Day 2 - a trip to Bilbao/Guggenheim, day 3 a day exploring Lekeitio, maybe spending time on the beach, out to dinner in the eve, Day 4 a trip to Guernica and day 5 departure to Hondarribia ( we will visit San Sebastian from there, as well as France).
Does this sound doable?
Any favorite restaurants in Leikeitio? Best Pintxos bars?

Seems doable to me and not very rushed. Nearby towns worth a stop are Zumaia and Getaria. They are only 6km apart by the back road and each worth a couple hours. Zumaia has a nice beach, Flysch formations, and Hermitage of San Telmo. Getaria has a cute main Street, church, and working fishing port. Hondarribia has a small historic district up by the parador, nice old city walls, and a nice beach. All the restaurants and shops are outside the historic center. On your way to Leikeitio, once off the major interstate expect the road to be 2-lane and windy, so it may take a little longer to drive that last part than you might think.
