While in Spain, my husband and I would like to take a side trip to Tangier, Morocco. We would be using public transportation and would like to take the ferry from Tarifa to Tangier. We are looking for advise in the best way to travel to Tarifa from either the Madrid or Barcelona area? Any recommendations on how much time we should stay in Tarifa and Tangier?
If you are starting from Madrid or Barcelona, the best way to get to Morocco for a side trip would be to fly to Marrakech or Fes. Tanger has a bordertown feel that is not for everyone, and it lacks the cultural highlights that you can find further south. Tarifa is a scruffy town as well (much smaller).
My advice is simply don't do it. You'll use up at least 2 full days to see one of the least attractive places in Morocco. I looked at most of the top tour companies before choosing mine. On two-week tours, not one of them went to Tangier, even though they visited several nearby places.
We were just in Tarifa a few days ago. We had a bus from Estepona, and I purposely gave us a lunch stop in Tarifa before we continued to Cadiz. (Mainly because I thought I might need a bathroom break for that length of time.). In our three hours in Tarifa, we were very glad we didn’t plan an overnight there.
If you’re there, we had a nice lunch at Cafe Azul, walked down afterwards through some of the older part down to the port and beach.
I wouldn't advise a trip to Tangier or Tarifa if you're in the vicinity let alone making a trip from Madrid or Barcelona. What attracts you to Tangier?
Forget Tangier, it would be a waste of time and money to visit that rat hole.
Morocco has some great places like Marrakesh and Fes, but Tangier is not one of them.
I agree with the other responses. There are flights to places like Fes and Marrakech from many European cities, so you don't necessarily have to make this the year you go to Morocco. You could include it in a trip to England, Germany, France, Italy, etc.
Thank you to everyone who replied. Based on your responses, we decided not travel to Tangier and instead spend more time in Spain.
