Seeking advice on visiting Pyrenees mountains.

Appreciate any recommendations for good home bases to explore Pyrenees mountains in Spain and France in July. We have 5 days and will be traveling by car.
Thanks so much in advance.

In France, look at Saint Sauveur or Cauterets and in Spain look at Benasque.

A lot depends on what you want to do and which part/area of the mountain range you want to visit. When looking at a map there are a number of north/south roads through the mountains, but few east/west roads. For example, with the suggestion of Benasque, it may be great, but there’s no direction to go from it except south. To go any place else one needs to drive south to an east/west road, then head north again.

For Spain, if looking for a base it may be better to look at places such as Jaca or Vielha where one can travel in multiple directions to get to other places.

With Arnold’s second suggestion, he may be referring to Luz-Saint-Sauveur. There are multiple Saint-Sauveur’s in France, but without the full name it’s difficult to know which is being referred to.

Adding on to Jaime's post, you will get better answers if you say when your trip will be and where are you coming from.

In the winter you have to be ready for snow and bad weather. And during the summer there are places where you can run into large crowds.

I know the western part of the Pyrenees, but if you are not heading over there, recommending visiting Izpegi wouldn't help.

In anycase, Jaca is worth visiting and further east, you might enjoy the Vall de Boi. (there is a recent post about it on the board)

We did a trip in September a few years ago that included driving from St-Jean-de-Luz, France, about 3-hours to Vielha, Spain (1 night), then about 3.5-hours to Ribes de Freser (1 night), then 2.5-hours to Cadaques on the coast. Beautiful scenery through the Pyrenees! Vielha is a pleasant little alpine village - I can recommend the Riu Nere Mountain Hotel, with balconies overlooking the Nere River. In RIbes de Freser, we took the Cremallera ("zipper") cog railway up to the "Vall de Nuria" (alt. ~2000 m), where there is a historical sanctuary, ski resort, gondola, trails, large play area for kids, and more. In Ribes de Freser, we stayed at Hostal Porta de Núria, just a few minutes walk from the cog railway station (where we parked for the night).

I second Luz-Saint-Sauveur. Small but has a grocery, shops, restaurants, and lodging. I stayed in Bareges, and we went to Luz for an afternoon. Bareges was okay for what we were doing, but it's tiny.

If you haven't watched this Rudy Maxa episode on France, I highly recommend: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OtMTWJc_j7Q
