Hello, we are doing an excursion from our cruise to explore Santiogo. I want to make sure there isn’t any specific dress codes for the Santiago Cathedral? Having experienced them in Italy, I want to be sure. Mainly wondering if shorts are ok? May wind up with long pants, but want to be 100% and I don’t see any comments in the RS Spain book. TIA
The thing is, even if six people come along and tell you no one was checking visitors' clothing at the cathedral last week, I wouldn't be willing to assume the same situation would prevail tomorrow. There are often volunteers involved in support activities at churches. Their availability may vary from one day to the next. Could the door-minders be volunteers who may be there one day and not the next? I just don't know. I went to the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela in 2016 but don't remember whether they were doing any checking at that time.
I do remember this: On the same trip, folks with bare shoulders or bare knees were being turned away at the Barcelona cathedral (not La Sagrada Familia). They stopped me and told me to remove my hat, and I'm female.
The cathedral is filled with pilgrims all the time who are often wearing shorts and sleeveless tops. The Spanish teens I saw on the last 100km had the shortest shorts I have seen in a long time, plus crop tops.
Honestly, when it is hot, a loose pair of cotton pants will keep you cooler, plus you won't stick to the pews in the church. Same thing with long-sleeve, loose cotton blouses. The air circulates better.
