San Sebastian to Oviedo

Hello!

We will be traveling to Spain the end of May. So far we have 3 days booked in San Sebastian and will be meeting family in Oviedo. We have three days tp spare between San Sebastian and Oviedo.

We have looked into Santander but are having a hard time finding out information on the town. We are open to any other recommendations on towns to visit. We do not have a car so we will be using trains or bus.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The obvious option is Bilbao, but perhaps you'll already have spent time there.

Santander isn't one of my favorite Spanish cities. It's not a bad place at all, but it suffered a horrendous fire in 1941 that wiped out a lot of the historic buildings. I love being surrounded by interesting architecture, and many Spanish cities have more to offer in that regard. The beaches are lovely to look at, though.

I found Vitoria-Gasteiz (Basque Country), Burgos and Leon considerably more interesting. Leon presents the possibility of a side trip to Astorga, which has a Gaudi building (Episcopal Palace). From Vitoria-Gasteiz you can get a bus (via Logrono, so not a quick trip) to the medieval hill town of Laguardia.

We have just travelled from Oviedo to Bilbao via the coastal FEVE railway. We enjoyed two nights in Llanes which is a lovely small seaside town with gorgeous beaches, a coastal cliff path that is part of the Camino del Norte, a small medieval area and great views of the Picos de Europas mountains.

We changed trains in Santander and it looked pretty grim. We are enjoying Bilbao and had a nice time at the Guggenheim today.
