San Sebastian to Barcelona - train or plane?

I will be traveling to San Sebastian to Barcelona in late August with my teen daughter. I think we will take a train there to San Sebastian (because the flights are very early and train is later and we want to enjoy a 1/2 day in Barcelona), but coming back to Barcelona, is it best to take a train or plane?

The options are:
Vueling OR Iberia flight 6:25p, arriving in Barcelona at 7:30p or train 4:10p, arriving in Barcelona 10:09p. Then overnight near the airport and taking a 10:30am flight back home to Los Angeles.

Which is better, plane or train? If the plane, is Vueling or Iberia better to fly? Right now Vueling is $44 and Iberia is $89 but I care more about making sure I make it back to Barcelona for my morning flight.

Take an early flight if available that way if it is cancelled you can take the train or the bus. Vueling and Iberia are part of the same company as British Airways the IMG group. Some of had bad experiences on all three.
I have flown Vueling twice and everything went as normal. It is a low cost carrier meaning you pay to check a bag or a seat, Like with any airline you book pay attention to read the rules or conditions of carriage, people generally have problems when they do not know that all airlines don't operate the same
