San Sebastian tips

Hello,
I'm planning a trip to San Sebastian in July. Wanting to rent a car to travel into Basque Country a bit or anywhere else (within an hour or two drive). Any tips for where to rent a car from and where to go? Also places we must go to have pintxos, maybe surfing lessons, just anything really that's great to do there. Anyone that's had a good time recently in San Sebastian please weight in.

Thanks,
Carlie

PS We're flying into Bilbao from Madrid and taking the bus to Donostia. I'm wondering if 30-45 min. is enough time from flight landing to bus boarding.

How many days do you have?

I like Bilbao better than San Sebastian. It's much less touristy and has a larger historic district, plus several art museums. Of course, San Sebastian has that gorgeous beach. (Weather doesn't always cooperate, however.)

The interior capital of Vitoria-Gasteiz sees few tourists and has a large, picturesque, hilltop historic district, plus a couple of art museums.

Hondarribia is a coastal town almost on the French border with a fishermen's district (restaurants) along the water and historic district uphill.

There are some cute former fishing villages (now touristy) stretched out along the coast between Bilbao and San Sebasian: Zarautz, Getaria, Zumaia, Lekeitio. Bermeo near Bilbao is also worth a stop.

The Basque countryside is very pretty. I recommend not spending all your time right along the coast. If you go to the ViaMichelin website and really zoom in, the especially scenic roads will be highlighted in green.

Olite is a back-of-beyond town with an impressive castle. It feels very different from the Basque country.

Pamplona is well within your range. There are many, many cities in Spain that I prefer. Check timing of the running of the bulls. I know the city is beyond filled up during that period.

The La Rioja wine area may be within 2 hours of San Sebastian. I am not a wine person and do not actually know where La Rioja is.

Just to add to acraven's already in-depth list - about 2 hr east of San Sebastian is the old medieval capital of Kingdom of Aragon, Jaca. Located high up in the Pyrenees, Jaca has some remains of medieval walls and towers, as well as the 11th-century Romanesque Jaca Cathedral. Another interesting site is the 16th century Jaca Fortress, which was built to protect the border from possible French invasion.

Thanks everyone for your responses!

We will have five days in Basque Country and you've given me lots of great ideas. I'm thinking now about renting a car from Bilbao and paying to have it parked in San Sebastian for a better daily rental rate and the easy of travel. Any suggestions about car rental details?
