We are taking back-to-back Rick Steves' tours in June-July 2018 (Portugal to Spain). We're planning to fly from Porto, Portugal, to San Sebastian, Spain, and are looking for the best way to travel from San Sebastian (EAS) airport to Bayonne, France. Any recommendations would be appreciated.
taxi is the easy way.
That seems to be a distance of about 24 miles, so a taxi could be pretty pricey. I'm a bit concerned that Rome2Rio.com doesn't mention the taxi option, which it usually does. Perhaps there's an issue with taxis running across the border. I realize that there are no border controls, but there might be a licensing issue.
In any case, you could hop a taxi (or perhaps there would be a bus) to the nearby Hendaye train station just across the border, from which both buses and trains run to Bayonne. If there's an issue with getting a taxi to cross the border, it looks as if the Spanish side of the border bridge is only about 0.4 miles from the train station.
If Rome2Rio is to be believed (questionable), both buses and trains from Hendaye to Bayonne are relatively frequent, with the bus being slower but cheaper. If you drill down on Rome2Rio, you should come to links to the appropriate bus and train websites, where you can check the schedule for the day of the week and approximate time of day you expect to depart.
The nearby large town of Hondarribia, just north of the airport, is worth exploration, by the way. I don't know about luggage-storage facilities, however.
We got stuck dropping a car off at the airport in San Sebastian. We were also going to Bayonne. In my opinion, the best way from the airport to Bayonne is taxi from airport to the bus station in San Sebastian. It was about 20 euros. Then take the bus to Bayonne. I did extensive research about ways from San Sebastian to Bayonne. The train was way too complicated, with stops and changes at the border. The bus was ideal. It was a nice scenic ride with great views and stops at St. Jean-de luc and Biarritz, the fancy seaside resort. It was very reasonable in price. The bus stop in Bayonne is very well situated. Close to the cathedral and hotels along the river. Check Rick's guide for bus info. and on line sights for location and schedules for the bus. We were pleasantly surprised with all that Bayonne had to offer. It was one of those little sleeper spots that we fondly remember. Have a great time! Hank, Novato,Ca
Hank, did your research show frequent buses? There's no information for July on the go-euro website yet, but I checked Monday, May 9, and found three buses listed but all with the same departure time of 12:15 PM.
The time sounds about right. The bus station was on the north side of the river. We bought our tickets in the morning and, you are right, there are many buses at the station. just make sure to get the one to Bayonne that is the quickest with the fewest stops.
I don't think the bus was a Go Euro but a Spanish/Basque bus. Once again, check Rick's book in the section on San Sebastian.
