We're looking for someplace within a few hours of Toulouse, France to visit in mid October. We'd welcome thoughts about San Sebastian, Spain or other options. We're interested in outdoor activities (hikes, walks, possibly cycling) and relaxation. (We've ruled out the Pyrenees because the chair lifts and gondolas don't run in Oct). Thank you!
Have you thought about Baztan Valley? It is close to San Sebastian, but is part of the Pyrenees. There is plenty to see and do, and mid October is a beautiful time to visit as the trees start to change color.
You can stay in the valley, Elizondo, for example. If you prefer staying in France you could stay in Ainhoa or Sare. Here is a map of the top of the valley with trails around Sare, Zugarramurdi (which is famous for it's witches) Urdax and Ainhoa.
This is a more general tourist info page for the valley with different routes listed.
Two places I like to visit are Gorramendi, a 1000m mountain which housed a US radar station in the 50's and 60's and is full of cromlechs. The other is the pass of Izpegi. There are several Ventas (restaurants) with great views of the Pyrenees. There are also several hiking routes there.
