Salamanca and Surrounds

We are spending five days in Salamanca between two RS tours, Andalucia and Portugal, in mid-October. Any recent Salamanca dining and/or day trip recommendations (beyond Madrid)? Thank you!

For me, Salamanca is one of Spain's most beautiful cities. You may find that you are more than content to spend all your time there. If not, I'd suggest either Zamora or Avila as day trips. Both are easy to get to and different to Salamanca and so interesting diversions.
I cannot recommend a specific restaurant. But I do suggest you try somewhere focusing on Salamanca and Castile y Leon cuisine. By mid-October they will be offering Autumn options and it will be nicely different to what you had in Andalucia (not necessarily better, just different!).

I can’t speak to using public transportation for getting around since I’ve always had a rental car, but there are many small towns and villages within 1.5 hours of Salamanca that are worth 2-3 hours each, e.g., Mogarraz, La Alberca, Hervás, and Tordesillas. There are a number of castles in that area if you like castles. In Peñafiel, Coca, Medina del Campo, Portillo and Cuellar. If you’re a Teresa de Ávila fan, her tomb is nearby in Alba de Tormes.

Nick’s suggestion of Zamora and Ávila is good. I’ll add Plasencia to the mix. Two hours from Salamanca is León. It’s nice but may be further than you’d want for a day trip.

I looked at Google maps and routes between some of the places I mentioned are currently affected by wildfires, so when you’re there check to ensure you can get to where you want to visit.

jaimeelsabio raises a good point. I'd assumed that being between RS tours, you'd want options easy to get to by public transport. But, if you're content to hire a car then there are many more choices as he shows.
