Descriptions for the tour of La Sagrada Familia include the tower. Our group of 6 seniors would like to see the sites from the tower and understand there is an elevator to the top and walking down from the tower. Before we book tickets, what can we expect walking down from the tower?
My wife and I did the tour of the Sagrada Familia including the Passion Tower in July 2023. (The Nativity Tower was sold out.) We are 70+ and did not have difficulty with the descent. It is a narrow spiral with the occasional small opening to look out. If I recall correctly you have to leave bags/backpacks in a locker before you get on the small elevator.
I am not a fan of walking down a lot of stairs, so I haven't climbed either tower. I recall a few earlier comments here to the effect that the city views from the towers are not all that spectacular. The earlier posters felt the main reason to ascend a tower was to get a better look at architectural details of the church itself.
In 2016 we did this.
Then, and I don’t know if it is different now, the spiral stone steps down had only a very low wall between you and the very far-below ground floor.
My friend and I hugged the interior wall all the way slowly down.
I found it very uncomfortable to the point of terrifying, as I don’t like heights much, and I felt the little wall open to the interior was not high enough to be safe, for me anyway!
If you don’t have a fear of heights it will be fine.
Of course, there may be newer higher walls or railings there now, if anyone else can chime in.
A picture is worth a thousand words, right?.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6JTuQkTX3es not the best of videos, but enough to get an idea. This is descending from one of the spires -not "towers", they are called spires :)-- in the Passion façade.
Oh, dear me. I don't have a significant problem with heights and my knees are just fine, but the lack of a handrail would make it a "no" for me; I'd definitely cause a major traffic jam.
@acraven - it looks like there is a handrail in the above video.
You're right--thank you. I only watched the first few seconds before freaking out.
