I’m looking for advice on sagrada Familia. I did not book in time to get tickets through the official website, but there are tickets available through tour operators such as get your guide and booking.com. My questions are: would you go in the morning or late afternoon? Would you use just an audio guide or a real tour guide? I could book the towers for a much higher price… I would love to do that, but I’m wondering if it’s worth it?
If no tickets are available from the official website, that means all the entry time slots are basically sold out. There will be a large number of people entering the church during each entry period. The only significant difference is likely to be that the people who are part of the first entry group will be walking into a church that starts out empty. Those people will still be in the church when the second group arrives, so it will become more crowded then. And so on. There's a lot to look at (and photograph) inside, so most visitors probably stick around for quite some time. My guess is the second entry group will have conditions not as crowded as the third entry group.
I was satisfied with the audio guide. I don't know how it works to be part of a group tour in a place like La Sagrada Familia if you want to take photos.
I have never bought an entry ticket to any sight from a third party and don't have a sense of whether that is risky. Tickets to La Sagrada Familia are not impossible to get (unlike some special tickets to the Colosseum in Rome, for example), so I wouldn't think the third-party companies are likely to be advertising tickets they do not actually have. However, I don't know what the current rules say about names on tickets.
I went to La Sagrada Familia in 2016; it was very busy then, but I know it's somewhat more crowded now, overall. What wasn't crowded was the museum, which I found very intersting.
One tip: Once you go into the shop, you cannot return to the church, so be sure to leave the shop until the end of your visit.
Thanks so much for your valuable perspective and for the information regarding the shop. That’s a great tip.
My husband and I will be touring La Sagrada Família in May. This will be my second visit. The first time was in 2022. I found a tour guide extremely helpful. The cathedral is unlike any other with unfamiliar symbolism (I'm Catholic and thought I understood a lot of symbolism!). We toured with Barcelonina Tours. She was fabulous. The guide walked us up the Passeig de Gracia to view the Block of Discord, we stopped for a cup of coffee, then we took a taxi to SF. It was in the morning, not too crowded. Expensive but absolutely worth it. This visit (my husband missed the first tour due to illness), we don't have another couple to split the cost so our travel agent (our daughter!) hired LivTours for a semi-private (6 people) afternoon tour. Hopefully, it will be just as remarkable. We did not book the tower because my husband had no interest in the stairs, but I may add it for myself, if possible!
I always prefer a live guide and a small group so that we can ask questions and focus on areas that are most interesting to us. Never sure if we'll get back to a location and want to make the most of it while we're there without over scheduling.
That's my 2 cents!
