Route through the eastern Pyrenees

From the south of France, we will be driving (leased car) west from Perpignan deep enough into the French Pyrenees to get a flavor of the high mountain scenery, then south across one of the mountain passes into Spain and then east through the Spanish Pyrenees to Barcelona.

We're relatively experienced mountain drivers. This would be around October 10-12, I believe.

I've posted a similar message on the French forum, but people here on the Spain forum would have a different perspective.

If we cross from let's say Foix into Andorra and then into Spain would we have missed the best parts?

Or should we go as far as St Gaudens and then take the N125 south to Spain and then some of the yellow C-roads east? (I'm looking at the Michelin Spain/Portugal map, which also includes southern France.

Thanks for any tips or links on this. I found some people who posted about Pyrenees road trips, but most started from San Sebastian.

I’ve only driven the Foix through Andorra route, but the roads on your alternate route appear to be in good repair and with the typical twists and turns one finds on mountain roads. If it was me and I had the time, I’d go with your alternate route just for the change. Just ensure you have plenty of fuel since stations may not be on every corner.
