Ronda or Granada and Sevillia

There are 7 of us traveling together. We have 3 full days and trying to make the most of it. We fly into Malaga and out of Sevillia. We wanted to see some of Spain before going on our cruise. Since we will have several pieces of luggage, we are wondering what is the best way to travel around to see these towns. Bus, Train or rent a car?

Sunday night fly into Malaga.
Monday: spend in Malaga and head out to Granda or Ronda in the afternoon.
Tuesday spend morning in Granda or Ronda then head to Sevillia
Wednesday: Sevilla and leave late afternoon flight to Barcelona

Thank you for your input!

I'd go with some combination of bus and train. A car would be nice to see some of the smaller towns, but a car that would fit 7 people would be too big to park or drive through many of the older towns. A car is not needed for Malaga, Ronda, Sevilla, or Granada anyway. A lot of luggage will be a bit of a hassle on trains and busses, but should be OK.

Between Granada and Ronda...Granada. The Alhambra is a must-see, world class sight. But get your tickets well ahead of schedule (I think they go on sale somewhere around 3 months ahead and do sell out).

As much as I love Granada, you might want to consider just going from Malaga to Sevilla. Stay in Sevilla, maybe take a day trip to Cordoba. Your time is very limited - you have less than a day in Granada or Ronda and less than a day in Sevilla. That is too short to get settled and enjoy both places - transit, finding hotel, getting bearings takes time.

I don't see much of interest in Malaga. As the first reply noted, Ronda is a very pretty smaller city on a steep hill. Granada is a major art and architecture site, with a nice city and other history (literary and religious, for example) all around the rest of the city. Granada is the easy choice. I don't see how 7 people and excessive cruise luggage can fit into one car. Are you prepared to rent 2? Even if you could come up with an American-sized SUV, I doubt they'd let you return it in a different place than you rented, because it would be such a rare rental-car animal in Spain! And the luggage might not fit.

The problem is that Seville and Granada are in opposite directions. Spanish highways are good, but it's a long way. I don't suppose it really affects your question, but the time of year often affects some details. You didn't say.

Because Seville is a really nice place, I also agree that you might as well go there. We spent three nights in Seville on a long visit to Spain. If you feel like you got gypped on seeing Spain, rent a car locally and (after researching) visit Arcos or Jerez or Carmona (which is a respectable substitute for Ronda.) Not to overstate the stereotypes, the ladies could go to the horse show in Jerez, while the men taste Sherry.

I'm sure you got the lowest airfare you could, but it might have been better to fly into Madrid, which is good for a week of "seeing Spain."

Sounds like you are going to have a great trip. I studied abroad in Seville and in Granada, and have traveled extensively in Andalucía. Bus is probably the quickest and easiest of all the different types of transportation that you can take. I would suggest that you not spend too much time in Malaga and make it to Granada on that first day. You can see the Alhambra, experience some tapas (Diamantes or one of the Jamon Serrano Tapas places), the Mirador, and just overall enjoy the atmosphere. The following later morning, take a bus (about 5 hours to Seville). In Seville there are very nice things to see as well, such as the Catedral, Alcazares, and Plaza de España. That should basically take up the three days and leave you ready for the cruise.

Sounds like you are committed to flying into Malaga (FYI: we have based out of Malaga for the past 15 years) so here is a thought to contemplate: Go for quality in lieu of quantity. Get thee to Seville via train ASAP. Do not drive (this is advice from a person who owns a car kept in Malaga). The train is an efficient, clean, scenic experience.
Sunday night rest your head in Malaga, take a late evening stroll and enjoy a pleasant dinner.
Monday morning jump on the first available train and arrive in Seville prior to noon.
Seville offers a wide range of wonderful experiences, be sure and take in a flamenco show one evening.
Stay up late, adopt local customs and eat late.
Tuesday you have a full day to explore Seville, but................... if you must sate a thirst to "see more" then consider a day trip to Ronda or to Cordoba.
Wednesday is for Seville prior to heading to the airport.
Forthrightly, attempting to include other destinations disproportionately adds travel time/expense to gaining time to experience the additional destinations.

Not quite sure what you intend to do with lots of luggage unless you are having a hotel in each of the locations you want to visit. Unless you do rent a couple of vehicles, or manage to hire a private driver that can keep you luggage I think that is the biggest challenge. All of the places you want to see are amazing, and I also totally enjoyed Malaga. We had great shopping, restaurants and wonderful views by walking all over the city. Each move to another hotel will take longer than you think when using buses.

I would also consider just doing 2 locations.... While the Alhambra is beautiful, I really would prefer Seville to hang out with 7 friends...

The problem is all travel logistics and not much time on the ground. I loved both Ronda and Granada/Alhambra, but with so little time I would be inclined to just head from Malaga to Seville and enjoy a couple days there. The Alcazar in Seville is very similar to the Alhambra and I don't think you have time for the Alhambra on this trip. If you wanted a quick visit though, Ronda would repay and evening and morning before heading on to Seville. But with only 3 days, I'd head for Seville -- a good 'hanging out' town with several stunning places to visit including the Alcazar. (go in the morning when the Royal Apartments are available to tour.) Here are our snapshots of Ronda in case you do want to head there:

If you decide on Granada arrange Alhambra tickets ahead -- it takes most of a day and tickets are sometimes not available last minute. I'd want to go as early as possible so you could move on to Seville that afternoon.

We used the bus from Seville to Ronda and the train from Ronda to Granada and the train from Granada to Madrid. I'd check the routes you have in mind to see which method was best for your trip.
