We want to drive from Barcelona to bilbao via the Vall de Boi and the Romanesque churches in the area. Has anyone done this?
I have been to this area between Catalunya and the País Vasco in the Pyrenees, I believe the route traverses northern Aragon and Navarra too. It is very beautiful and breathtaking with many things to see in between. Depending on which months you go, it can be a bit of a difficult drive, especially in the winter months. Is there a specific question you have in mind?
For the area around Oviedo: http://www.spainisculture.com/en/rutasculturales/rutadelromanicoenlosalrededoresdeoviedo.html
And this is the UNESCO listing for the pre-Romanesque churches: https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/312
We'll be doing it in early January, will the roads have snow? Will places be open?
I would not recommend attempting this trip in January/February, especially if your focus is on historical sites like the Romanesque churches. Since you will be high up in the Pyrenees many of the high mountain roads will be snowed in/very difficult to drive on, with the good possibility of road closures too. Many people (myself included) will only go to this part of Spain during the winter for the sky resorts in the Pyrenees. Other than the sky resorts, quite a few things will be closed during January/February, including some touristic infrastructure.
Personally, I would go June/July, this is the best time of year to go to fully experience the nature and history of the Pyrenees.
For information:
- Romanesque churches of the Vall de Boí, a short video so you can have a glimpse. And a more detailed video here so you can plan a route.
- Vall de Boí tourism website, useful for planning where to stay and what to visit.
- A handy downloadable map of roads of Catalonia (pdf)
- Romanesque Routes in Catalonia: step-by-step
- Catalan National Weather Forecast Service -only in Catalan, the local language, but just introduce the name of the town you want a forecast for and you'll have plenty of visual information. This, being an official gov organisation, it's the best and most accurate weather service for the area of Catalonia.
- Government of Catalonia: Mobility, especially useful to follow any incidences regarding mobility (closed roads, etc). Again, use Google Translate.
January is not necessarily the best month to visit as the Pyrenees are snowed and certain smaller roads can be closed, still, if you stick to main roads you can visit plenty of stuff in the area. If anything, ensure you have snow chains in the car -just in case you want to wander in smaller roads.
And lastly.... a couple of teasers, one of the Pireneus de Girona and this most specifically of Vall de Boí in winter :))
Enjoy!
