Road trip to Cordoba and Estremadura

plan to visit Extremadura and Cordoba from May 3rd to May 13th, 2024, starting from Madrid Airport with a return to Madrid.

I have two options:

First option:

Would it be wiser to drive directly from Madrid airport to Guadeloupe and make a stop on the way at Talavera de la Reina and Templo Los Mármoles?

After 2 nights in Guadalupe, I will visit Trujillo for a short stay and continue to Caceres for 2 nights before heading to Cordoba for 3 nights and returning to Madrid for 3 nights.

Second option :

The second option would be to drive directly to Caceres and use it as a base to visit Trujillo, Guadalupe, and Merida.

What is the better option in your opinion?

During the journey from Caceres to Cordoba, I plan to make a stop at Zafra and Llerena.

Is it recommended to visit Priego de Cordoba during my stay in Cordoba?

On the return way from Cordoba to Madrid, since it is a long journey, where is it recomended to make some short stops on the way?

Thank you.

Priego de Cordoba is quite an attractive white town, but it's closer to Granada than to Cordoba. There are probably better or at least equally good alternatives that would be more convenient for you--maybe Ecija? I haven't been there, but I think I've seen it described as picturesque.

The town of Almagro would require a detour off the highway between Cordoba and Madrid, but it has rather distinctive architecture you might enjoy seeing. Toledo has a great deal more to offer, of course, but that's a full-day sort of place, not really suited to a brief stop.

I’ll assume you won’t be driving after a long flight. I like option 1 best. Guadalupe is between 2-2.5 hours from Madrid’s airport. While there are no wow sites in Talavera de la Reina it is supposedly nice to walk around. A wild card is the temple site. I’ll be going to both locations later this year and I have no idea how much time to allot to the temple site. From the temple site you’ll drive on the EX-118 all the way into Guadalupe. (EX stands for Extremadura)

The main site in Guadalupe is the Royal Monastery of Santa María de Guadalupe. Trujillo has no wow sites either and a short visit of a couple hours should be plenty. It is only an hour from Guadalupe. Trujillo to Cáceres is a quick 30 minutes drive.

Heading back to Madrid from Córdoba (4.5 hours) consider stopping in Almagro as acraven mentioned. It is on the list of Spain’s prettiest villages. Other places worth stopping at are Consuegra for its windmills and castle, and Campo de Criptana for its windmills made famous in Cervantes’ Don Quixote. If you wanted to take a more easterly route you could stop at Belmonte Castle, Roman ruins at Segobriga, or Chinchón. Taking the eastern route would put you on the correct side of Madrid if returning the vehicle to the airport.
